A big mistake in innovation is building something new for a predictable interim now, not the long term. Redbox was a sophisticated vending machine to rent DVD's from, just as streaming made sense. Coin was a sophisticated digital credit card, just as digital wallets emerged Mini Disks were better CD's, just as MP3 was coming. Anyone building/changing for most (unique to) 2020 behaviors, trends or data, will likely look foolish in Sept 2021 …see more

Building a modern business is no longer "building", it's assembly. "Making" a mobile phone in 2005 meant creating your own hardware and making your own software, now it's using licensing software and assembling components. "Car Makers" in 2010 put 30,000 components together, 1,000 of which moved. Car makers today can use a "Skateboard" and build far more simply and quickly, modern car's can be developed in a year, one of the fastest cars in the world is made by Rimac with a handful of staff and little experience. Modern companies don't need to own mainframes, or construct anything, they simply "rent" prefabricated software which they license and they arrange techstacks around their needs. It becomes more about interfaces and interoperability than constructions. It's more proof that it's now faster, easier and cheaper and with less risk to build than ever, and likely harder, more culturally complex & slower to change. Increasingly your expertise moves from being less unhelpful to being a barrier to change. Your assets become anchors not foundations. Your ability to learn more important than your ability to know. https://lnkd.in/dKe8ejc …see more

The more that Data and data culture permeates the world, the more worrying it is that data literacy is so poor. Worse still people seem almost proud to be “ a bit bad at maths” or that “ numbers are not my thing”. We’d never say that about spelling or reading. Even the number of people who understand that correlation isn’t causation or the idea of direction of causality is shocking …see more

Everyone is very quick to talk or reply but very reluctant to listen or think. We think we already have the answer and it’s clear, when things rarely are. It’s a bizarre state of affairs which makes social media a fairly hostile place for debate. Twitter especially so as character limitations remove nuance or complexity at a time where depth and subtlety matter .

I'm in Manila this week, speaking in my 55th city and 27th Country in the last few years. Got two new cities and countries to add in the rest of the year with sessions in Auckland and Karachi in Nov and Dec. A lot travel isn't always as glamorous as people think, but it's an incredible privilege. With a good attitude most of the trials and tribulations of it all are totally manageable. For all the moaning about planes being cramped or delays, most workers in travel do an incredible job and it's amazing to see how they smile through the most awful customers. Modern airlines are miraculous in their efficiency and we rarely admire them. The only thing that really kills me is Jetlag. …see more

Given the rise of eCommerce and the difficulty in making profit there, you would have expected cpg/fmcg companies to so something totally nuts like offer larger sizes, change packaging, actually use images online that allow you to see what you are buying not just photos of products. Do a 31 size pack and call it " a month of ", and synch with subscriptions. We insist on seeing new behaviors, new possibilities and new opportunities and then establishing how to sprinkle a bit of that on to what we've always done …see more

I stand with the World Health Organization and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus , WHO's Director-General. I watched him speak with great passion on a grand stage during the 2017 Universal Health Coverage Forum in Tokyo. I have seen Dr. Tedros hug my hero Edna Adan Ismail and share memories as only kindred spirits do during the 2018 United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. And I have witnessed him comfort the widow of a health care worker who was murdered during an attack on an #ebola treatment center in Butembo, Democratic Republic of Congo in 2019. I know the mind-boggling challenge that Dr. Tedros has shouldered with great aplomb and intense focus. Because I know he believes, from the depths of his being, that #HealthForAll should not be just a slogan. I know Dr. Tedros understands that #COVID19 is the wake-up call the world needs to understand what #globalhealth really means. For #FlashbackFriday , yesterday at 3:50 am, when my #BFF Faith T. drove me to the airport for my #Detroit flight. I felt guilty asking the favor, but she just said, “What are #friends for?” Well, the best investment you can make in life is to pick really authentic, trustworthy, principled, generous, brave, supportive people to be your friends. You have to see the best part of yourself in them, and make sure they can do the same with you. I’ve known Faith since 1979, and she's the same vibrant, positive and selfless person I met at Northwestern University . She's a realtor with Keller Williams Realty - Charlotte South Park , and recently, she was the only woman on an expert #affordablehousing panel hosted by Bank of America . I may be biased, but she was clearly the star. Back in January, my friend Lisa Grace Lednicer spoke during a workshop panel I was leading for The Aspen Institute , carving time from her busy schedule as an editor at The Washington Post and an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland . I returned the favor by speaking to one of her classes. Seeing Lisa blossom from the striving young St. Petersburg Times reporter in 1988 to the confident, impassioned woman she is today is wonderfully enriching for me. PICK. GREAT. FRIENDS. I CAN'T SAY IT ENOUGH. …see more

"When we think that something is more powerful than we are, we give up." This is my gripe with the Netflix docu-horror film, The Social Dilemma. Yes, distraction is easier than ever to find if you’re looking for it. Everybody has a smartphone full of apps designed to keep us engaged and scrolling. But this doesn’t mean that we’re powerless. We are FAR more powerful than tech companies. When it comes to taking back our attention and living by our values, we have to look for the root causes. Distraction starts with discomfort. When we’re lonely, we check Facebook. When we are uncertain, we check Google. When we’re bored, we check Twitter. As with all human behavior, distraction is just another way our brains attempt to deal with pain. If we accept this fact, we realize that handling distraction is about learning to handle the discomfort in a healthier manner. What are some ways you’ve handled discomfort lately instead of going online? #Indistractable #Growth #Technology #thesocialdilemma …see more

One of the most important tactics we can use to help our children develop healthy relationships with technology is empowering them with autonomy. When my daughter was five, my wife and I asked her how much screen time per day she thought was good for her. We took a risk by giving her the autonomy to make the decision for herself. To our surprise, she sheepishly asked for “two shows” -- two episodes of kid-appropriate programming a day. Armed with the logic behind why limiting screen time was important, our daughter used this autonomy to make a smart decision for herself. Distraction is a problem like any other. When we discuss our problems openly and in a supportive environment, we can resolve them together and spend our time in ways that we truly want to. Parents need to understand that it’s okay to put their kids in charge, because it’s only when they learn to practice monitoring their own behavior that they learn how to manage their own time and attention. Remember, we’re not raising children, we’re raising future adults. What kinds of distraction issues do you struggle with your children about? Do you have any tips for fellow parents? #Indistractable #Empowerment #Support …see more

A lack of focus comes at a cost. The challenge at work, of course, has always been to dodge things that distract us. But today’s distractions feel different. The amount of information available, the speed at which it can be disseminated, and the ubiquity of access to new content on our devices has made for a trifecta of distraction. What’s the cost of all this? In 1971, the psychologist Herbert A. Simon emphasized that a wealth of information means a dearth of something else: attention. The workplace is rapidly changing, and in the near future, there will be two kinds of people in the world: those who let their attention and lives be controlled and coerced by others and those who proudly call themselves “Indistractable.” Check out my recent CNBC article (link in comments!) on the most important skill of the 21st century and be sure to share your thoughts below! #Indistractable #Focus #Attention #HumanBehavior #Psychology …see more

I have been SO excited to share this story with you! The motorcycle club taught me a LOT about life... I admired the ability for club members to build personal brands from their "hang around" days that lasted decades later, reaching clubs across the globe. Anytime you would mutter the club's name, someone would speak up, "Larva helped me out of a pickle one time..." or "Dakota hitched my bike from Sturgis to Chicago in '09." Being around the club was like living in a time capsule, captured in time where storytelling, integrity, and family were the foundations of life. In fact, these core values shaped the woman I am today. I learned a lot as a professional from this experience, including my obsession with branding and building community as well as how to let toxic trolling comments roll off your back like the wind against your two-wheels. If you had an MC nickname, what would it be in and why?! Share in the comments - it may just be what it takes to launch your personal brand forward 🙃 I hope you enjoy the read! https://lnkd.in/ejVPVUx #Leadership #Career #Motorcycles …see more

In the simplest of terms, interdependent leadership means shifting your perspective to view the world through the lens of "we" rather than "I;” here are six truths to help you do that: Relying on other people does not equal weakness; it creates strength. When you create a culture that embraces collaboration, you draw on the highest and best use of each team member's talents. Everything and everyone is—or can be—connected. Interdependent leaders see the possibilities—no matter how obscure—in everything, and understand and how that connectivity can be put to use. Fostering and maintaining relationships is crucial. Your ability to connect with others matters, whether you're trying to collaborate or communicate with them. Empowering people builds trust. Micromanaging doesn't happen with interdependent leaders because they don't feel the need to be in control. Leading with positivity trumps leading with fear. Interdependent leaders tend to be confident, allowing positivity and openness to shine, which naturally draws others to them. Taking risks and embracing failure are opportunities to grow. Interdependent leaders know that failure and success aren't mutually exclusive; they're connected. #leadership #career #mindset #growth #relationships #emotionalintelligence …see more
