There are many books about A.I., but now I show you one that will describe every major issue about how A.I. works. And also about how it doesn't. Janelle Shane did a wonderful job with ""You Look Like a Thing and I Love You"". I loved every page of it. My favorite part was when she described how hard it is to teach a machine learning algorithm by trying to make it put together good sandwiches. If you once read that part, you will never forget the basics of how machine learning deals with a task. Highly recommended read! #AIBook #ArtificialIntelligence #BookRecommendation #AI #MachineLearning …see more

Another excellent example of how A.I.-based systems could help improve healthcare. On January 9, the WHO notified the public of a flu-like outbreak in China. But a Canadian health monitoring platform, BlueDot Inc , sent word of the outbreak to its customers on December 31. It uses an AI-driven algorithm that scours foreign-language news reports, animal and plant disease networks, airline ticketing data and official proclamations to give its clients advance warning to avoid danger zones like Wuhan. It also correctly predicted that the virus would jump from Wuhan to Bangkok, Seoul, Taipei, and Tokyo in the days following its initial appearance. There is so much data that even the most experienced experts are not able to deal with it or see everything while these algorithms can filter through the mess of information. I hope governments and global organizations will take advantage of them. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #deeplearning #machinelearning #wuhan #coronavirus #epidemics …see more

Good morning. ECB President Christine Lagarde's comments (via the Financial Times below) touch on an issue economists have been debating but are yet to come to a conclusion: What happens to savings behavior and, therefore, the dynamism of aggregate demand. Even more important as the consensus is that the supply side will be more sluggish leading to lower productivity and less growth potential. #economy #ecb Christine Lagarde …see more

Kevin Warsh, former Federal Reserve Governor, highlights an economy/finance contrast in the Fed's policy approach. China participated in the G-20 call for debt relief for certain developing countries. Per the Financial Times, it has now received "a wave" of requests from BRI (Belt and Road) countries. Yet to be seen: the terms China grants on debt relief, as well as how it approaches PSI (private sector involvement). https://lnkd.in/eZYdn2A #china #bri #economy #markets #FT Financial Times …see more

The lack of effort to digitize our physical ID is amazing. Still in a world of hand written signature, picture based plastic ID's, when we could be using fingerprints or Iris scans. That we still need to carry stuff blows my mind. The smartness should be in the cloud, not on our bodies.

When thinking about the future, the mistakes everyone seems to make are: 1) They only imagine one variable changing at a time. 2) They don't see how variables interact with each other. What happens when electrical tech and self driving tech and VR and new labor models and AI all come together? 3) They overestimate the change in hardware and underestimate the change from software. …see more

Among the many lessons I learned perhaps a bit late, here's a lesson I fortunately learned very early: No matter your profession, level of responsibility, or status: In my most humble opinion, if you're a parent, you have no greater responsibility than to be the VERY BEST parent you can be to your children. Alongside that, the most important gift you can give them is your time. #dobetter #life …see more

Dear Celestine Omin - welcome to the United States of America!! We're thrilled to have you here, despite your unpleasant experience with Custom Border Patrol. Kudos to you for keeping your calm and aplomb, especially while answering technical questions for people who had no idea what the technical questions were, just to prove you are an engineer (as part of the "interview", I at least hope the CBP agents learned what a Binary Search Tree actually is). If you're ever in Seattle, I'd love to meet you and treat you to a cup of coffee. Best, -Nick …see more
