As companies debate whether or not to bring employees back to the office full-time, they scramble to refine their remote work policies. One company they could learn a lot from: Google. Chief executive Sundar Pichai recently announced that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Google would extend its work from home policy until at least July 2021. That's a telling decision considering that Google quite possibly has access to some of the richest data sets in the world. Among that data is research the company published last year. A team surveyed over 5,000 Google employees and held focus groups with about a hundred more in order to better understand the impact of distributed work. They focused on measuring: -Well-being -Performance -Connectedness -Productivity Google came up with several recommendations. I couldn't help but notice how many of these practices are founded on emotional intelligence: the ability to identify, understand, and manage emotions. (Read more in today's column.) #EmotionalIntelligence #google #remotework #workfromhome #workfromanywhere #management #leadership #eqapplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
If you want to be productive figure out what you are doing it and WHY! Focus your energy and effort on creating impact not staying in the busyness.
Becoming aware of what impedes your ability to focus and eliminating distractions so you can complete your work are essential to enhancing your productivity. However, if what you are focusing on and working on is not connected to a broader purpose or goal, then you are like a boat without a rudder — directionless and unmoored. …see more

A lot of the most important, challenging & unresolved problems in the modern era are extremely complex. It's easy to appear to solve them quickly in a superficial fast way. But to really solve them we need to address them properly, to understand the fundamentals on which they have formed, often the errors of human circuitry and the slow aggregation of a legacy of awful decisions. We are in a weird modern era where the rigorous questions required to reveal the foundations more unwelcome than ever. Where the scrutiny and soul searching needed to provide clarity are deemed hostile. When debate involves questions, probing and testing viewpoints that are these days career-ending ( both if taken out of context, and increasingly in context) despite their utterly noble intentions. We need a lot more scrutiny, we need powerful, honest critical thinking. We need debate, nuance, to be comfortable operating near points of huge contention. We need sophisticated fact-based discussion with near impunity. Not because it's a sign of an advanced liberal tolerant world with freedom of speech, but because it's how we REALLY understand and then start to address & then solve the big issues today. We are doing ourselves a huge disservice. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. …see more
Being on hold on phone for one hour, because a companies website has crashed under pressure, and hearing every minute messages to use their website, is one of the more frustrating things. I'd love companies to use this moment to realize how vital self serve websites are.

The Nation Media Group #NMGLeadershipForum is about to begin, and as I said the other day, I’m very grateful for the serendipity that placed me in #Nairobi in time to attend. But I am not only grateful, but also humbled and awed to be seated next to the legendary Dr. Miriam Were, the woman who has almost single-handedly transformed #Kenya’s community health care system. The last time we met, it was at the Universal Health Coverage Forum in #Tokyo last December. God, I love my life. #blessedandhighlyfavored #UHC #HealthForAll #globalhealth …see more
I have just seen the future of urban development: New York's Hudson Yards development on steroids - the new Qianhai special district in Shenzhen, on the water 30 minutes from Hong Kong. No one does infrastructure like the Chinese.

I was recently featured in Forbes thanks to Brian Collins . I left a few nuggets of wisdom for the reader: Psychologists have verified that if you plan ahead, if you decide what it is you want to do and what time you want to do it, you become much, much more likely to actually follow through. However, don't leave any white space. If you have white space on your calendar, somebody is going to plan your time for you, unless you've decided in advance what you want to do with it. We can't call something a distraction unless we know what it distracted us from. So we have to account for that time based on how we want to spend that time, so that we don't find ourselves wasting it doing something frivolous. Everywhere we look, precautionary measures have been enacted for our safety, but the social distancing they encourage can have a negative impact on our overall well-being. Here’s how to counteract that: Start writing letters When was the last time you received a handwritten note? Go old school by writing and sending letters via snail mail to those for whom you care. Pick up the phone Since more and more people are working from home, their availability to talk has increased. And since they’re alone, they’ll likely appreciate hearing from you as much as you’ll enjoy talking with them, whether they’re a friend, client, or colleague. Message away Compose quick messages to your teammates throughout the day to catch up and offer support to bridge the distance, and text your friends and family Increase your video calls Swap in-person client meetings for video chats and conduct virtual face-to-face sessions with your colleagues. Simon Sinek even suggests that office teams establish a Monday morning virtual huddle ritual, not to discuss work, but to check in on each other and foster a sense of community. Create and converse in online groups Form online pods of like-minded people to facilitate conversations and build stronger relationships. #connection #career #socialdistancing …see more

In 2021, I’ll ✨ILLUMINATE.✨ That’s the word I selected to guide me and focus my efforts. It means to shine a light on something, clarify or make something understandable, make spectacular, and glow or light up. For me, it’s about taking helpful, positive action by seeking knowledge and sharing wisdom, lighting a new path, and shining even brighter. My first ray of light? A new newsletter, aptly titled, #IlluminateMe . I’ll regularly share illuminating nuggets drawn from my three-plus decades of real-world experience of being a professional communicator, leader, and pretty decent human being. Think of me as your insight Oprah (You get illuminated! You get illuminated!), covering my faves: #communication 👩💻 #storytelling 🗣 #writing ✍️ #creativity 🌈 #emotionalintelligence & #softskills ❤️ #leadership 🦸♀️ #humanbehavior 🧠 (And to keep you on your toes, a wild card🃏may appear.) It’ll include articles, videos, audio, and infographics infused with my own brand of “Amy-ness.” Most will be my original stuff; some will be content I curate from those I admire, inspire me, or make me think. All will be useful. If it’s illuminated me, chances are, it’ll enlighten you as well. And who couldn’t use a glow-up? So, whaddya say—wanna be illuminated? Subscribe below.👇 …see more
