The world can be a divisive place, particularly on social media, where Twitter firestorms, Facebook propaganda, and the LinkedIn content police often prevail. Those spewing negativity from their keyboards drive us farther and farther apart. They either push people into a lose-lose “my way or the highway” position or shut down healthy and civil dialogue altogether. They shun any person with an idea, belief, or perspective that differs from their own, choosing instead to attack or mock them rather than use it as an opportunity to be open, listen, and better understand. Whether they realize it or not, fear drives them. But there’s a better way. If you’re reading this, YOU have the power to use social media in a positive, encouraging, and productive way. You can share your insights and experiences, your struggles, and your triumphs. You can move past fear and out of your comfort zone to tell your unique story to help others. You can be inclusive and draw people to you to celebrate your similarities and learn from the differences. Because your words have power. And the words you choose are amplified on social media, for better or for worse. Be intentional with them, and use them for good.
