Out of curiosity, I decided to dive into the database of Pubmed.com in September to see how many studies have mentioned machine or deep learning technologies in the last decade. It seems we have an almost exponential boom of such studies in medicine and healthcare - which is not surprising. It was also expected that oncology, pathology, and radiology stand out when it comes to using A.I. methods in medicine. However, I was surprised to see so many studies in psychiatry, surgery, and neurology while you don't see discussions, news and announcements about those developments often. At the same time, it seems that cardiology, ophthalmology, and dermatology, the specialties with the most exciting news and developments seem to be underrepresented. The explanation could lie in the method I used to mine the database but it's still interesting. The Medical Futurist core team just had an amazing workshop to prepare for 2019 with strategy and design. I can't wait to share with you what we cooked. We closed the workshop in style with board games and dinner at a futuristic place. I just gave a keynote to Innomar Strategies in a beautiful place in North Canada about how it's possible to bring science fiction to the lives of patients and how digital health makes patients the point-of-care. Excellent feedback, even better questions and an open-minded group with a bold vision about the future. On the photo, my amazing host, Alexandra Novis. One question was particularly interesting, A gentleman asked about the future of privacy in health insurance. I responded that on the nightmare end of the scale (Dr. Big Brother scenario), data cannot be part of the system. No insurance company should be able to raise my premium as I choose a steak over a salad live because they can measure it. The GINA law in the US is a fine example how to avoid that. On the paradise end of the scale (Oscar Health scenario), companies can only reward a healthy lifestyle by sharing data with them. Have you seen good or bad examples worldwide on either end of the scale? #technology #business #design #health #healthcare #digitalhealth #insurance #future #keynote #speaker …see more

Normally when “bears are in retreat,” they’re forced to buy stocks quite broadly and the “market” as a whole goes up. Instead the market went down this week with only a small handful of stocks surging. Yet another indication of the special market conditions #investing #investors #stocks …see more

Good morning. US Futures point to a second day of pressures on stocks. Dow futures are down almost 500 points and the S&P some 2%. (European markets are closed for the May Day Holiday.) Proximate causes include increased China-US tensions, earnings and natural give-back after the best monthly rally since '87. #markets #stocks #economy …see more
To illustrate the tricky policy trade-offs, you need to look no further than this editorial by The Wall Street Journal . Critical of what's being done, this is part of a growing backlash fueled by the view that the Federal Reserve is again doing way too much for Wall Street and way too little for Main Street. https://lnkd.in/eYB3Jz9 #economy #markets #Fed #FederalReserve Federal Reserve Board #centralbanks #mainstreet #wallstreet #wsj The Wall Street Journal …see more
Here's why I liked Andrew Yang when he was running for President: you could tell there was no bullshit. He would say things on the debate state like, "I'm Asian so I know a lot of doctors". Things like that would show he was completely unscripted. He felt like someone I could have a coffee with instead of someone who was trying to win over groups that his polls told him were important. I had two big questions for him a year ago: "Is automation really the problem with future job loss?" My point, with many historical examples, is that automation leads to greater profits, which lead to greater opportunities for new innovations and jobs. Given that, how necessary is a UBI to help transition people from one industry to another? If the new opportunities arise quickly, do we need a UBI at all? He answered this in the podcast? . . #andrewyang #yanggang #podcast #lifestyle …see more

It's never been easier to build something new It's never been easier to add new skills It's never been easier to raise money It's never been easier to find great staff It's never been easier to find great partners. It's never been easier to acquire great companies or tech At the same time, it's as hard as ever to change. Hard to change core competency, hard to change structure, hard to change process, hard to change culture. We should probably accept we're not in the culture transformation business, but the culture creation business. Not in the business transformation business, but the business creation business. The way out is less like a caterpillar changing into a butterfly, but like a parent having a child. It's not a magical leap, but providing support, advice, shelter, financial help, but also giving tones of freedom …see more
Maybe this isn’t profound and it’s just semantics but can’t help think if we championed being imaginative in our jobs rather than creative, it would lead to better questioning, more interesting approaches, more novel solutions, a wider range of ideas, solving at new altitudes and still be a little practical.
Excited to launch my new Interesting People in Interesting Times podcast featuring live talks from the IPIT events in NYC -- a forum for discovery and debate with provocative thinkers, great ideas and bold new thinking. For our first episode, we spotlight Andrew Yang, tech entrepreneur, author, and founder of Venture for America, who is running for president as a Democrat in 2020. Andrew talks about the very real and immediate threat of artificial intelligence, how new technologies are erasing millions of jobs before our eyes, and why we need to put humanity first -- or face a future that's going to look like either Mad Max or Star Trek. He also addresses "the big four" and what he plans to do about Amazon. For Android people try this. https://lnkd.in/dnN-tVu …see more
