Sebastian Maniscalco is the funniest, most successful, guy nobody has ever heard of. Last year, he made $15,000,000. He didn't have a TV show, movies, radio show. Or...a podcast! I want to find out every avenue there is for success. So he told me this: http://9nl.es/vl42 …see more

The problem with mental scarcity is that it creates its own trap. It further perpetuates scarcity and reduces all components of our mental bandwidth—we are less insightful and less forward thinking; we have less mind to give to the dreaming about that next breakthrough idea—which are essential components of innovation. If you want to nurture innovation, start thinking about how to reduce mental scarcity and increase mental bandwidth. …see more
Locus of control is a concept developed by psychologist Julian Rotter. It refers to the extent that individuals believe that they can control the events that affect them. A person with an internal locus of control believes that success or failure is due to their own efforts, while a person with an external locus of control believes that success or failure is controlled by other people, environmental factors, chance, or fate. Where is your locus of control? Does it decrease or increase your personal productivity? It’s a question most people have never asked themselves—but one that can change your life. …see more
The Worlds most useful but commercially unsuccessful training course would run on how to best communicate and work in the modern world. Pretty sure most people have no idea how to write a business email, people have no idea how to make an agenda, how to intro people, how and when to have a meeting. Nobody would ever buy such training, we want something more sexy and we assume we know what we're doing. But advising people what tools to use to best get the job done would be invaluable. The main fault of 2021 is we work around the tool not the outcome. It's always “Lets have a zoom” not “ let’s have informal conversations? or let's make decisions about X, or let's share information widely. We've the best tools we've ever known, but also the most, choosing the tool is more important than ever, choosing the duration is more important, choosing what to prepare beforehand, who to invite, who to require. All super boring, incredibly valuable things we fail to think about because we prefer to be busy than to make a difference. Because making a difference means you ruffle feathers. …see more
Always seems like it's the middle that's hard. You can become a mass car maker if you can commit to shifting 100,000+ cars per year, or you can be a niche player making 200 cars by hand, but how do you make 15,000 cars? You can be a DTC brand dropshipping 5000 units per year as a hobby and buying ads on Facebook, or be massive, buy space in retailers, invest in brand advertising and churn out millions of products. But being in the middle is hard. You can be a thrusting start up breaking little laws, or skirting regulations knowing if you probably won't get noticed, and if you do you won't destroy a brand with heritage and value. Or you can be a huge companies with the best lawyers around, but being medium sized is hard. It's not incredibly hard to be small, it's not hard to stay big, but it's hard for small to scale to big, and it's hard for big to act or do small. A lot of startup life is burning rocket fuel (cash) to escape the earth's gravitational pull ( unit economics). A lot of brands still haven't made it to orbit, but we celebrate their altitude, even though it means a crash to earth would be even more devastating. …see more

If all we'd known is electric scooters and someone invented the car, we'd ban the car very fast. Wish we could use more imagination about the future and how tipping points work.
...Open request to journalists or bloggers covering International Women's Day tomorrow: please don't ask (or, worse, hypothesize) how being a woman makes someone better (or worse) at their job than being a man. That is the wrong narrative to pursue, it's a misguided attempt to capitalize on a day meant to highlight the importance of equality, and it is completely inappropriate in a business context. I'd be happy to help you come up with 100 other things to write about on this misunderstood day. #IWD2017 …see more

Still processing the incredible privilege and joy of watching Jemele Hill give the keynote speech last night at #JAWSCamp18 . Her remarkable journey as a woman and a journalist is surpassed only by her astonishing authenticity. Those of us who know and love her best can only marvel at how real, honest, and totally comfortable in her own skin she is. I was beyond honored to hear her say that I was one of her first mentors, but what’s even more exciting is that Jemele somehow finds time in her insanely busy life to give that energy back. Watching her interact with the star struck young journalists last night reminded me of how important it is to give young women access to mentors and the chance to believe that one day they can achieve their goals. I couldn’t have known that witty, spunky, vibrant, talented 16 year old girl from Mumford High School in #Detroit would one day speak truth to power about the leader of the free world, or host a TV show or write for The Atlantic . But now that I really think about it, maybe I knew it all along. #JAWS Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) #rolemodels #Mentors #womenleaders #mentoring #women #diversityandinclusion …see more

You'll also learn why African American women of a certain age are in deep mourning right now, because she personified our struggles and triumphs. RIP, #ArethaFranklin . …see more
Wrapping up my reporting trip to Ferguson, Missouri for National Geographic Magazine, and thinking a lot about access to health care, reproductive health rights and socio-economic justice. I couldn’t have found a better guide for my journey than Brittany Kellman , the Executive Director of the Jamaa Birth Village in Ferguson. Her commitment to supporting women through the journey of pregnancy and motherhood is remarkable. I can’t wait to share her own compelling story, from teen mother to Missouri’s first African American Certified Professional Midwife, in the Magazine. #justice #rights #pregnancy #birth #reproductivehealth #reproductiverights #maternalhealth #globalhealth #birthequity #HealthForAll …see more
This particular #FlashbackFriday image isn't ancient; it's from about 7 or 8 years ago, when my locks were still stubbornly refusing to grow. But it's an important image for me, because I'm with Juliette J Mutheu-Asego , one of the first people I met in #Kenya who actually "got" what I was doing over there, trying to mentor journalists to report on #health and #research issues. Juliette co-founded the Kenya Science Cafe movement, and worked for the KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme. We became #sciencecommunication partners in crime, and also good friends. And I'm so proud to have witnessed Juliette's career journey to its current location: Head of Communications and PR for the African Academy of Sciences . I should be able to update this image very soon, as I prepare to head back across the Atlantic for my reporting on #maternalmortality. #Africa #sciencereporting #journalism #mentoring …see more

"Change is supremely inconvenient, uncomfortable and naturally scary. Yet we only move through life through the process of change, reinvention and renewal, and so bravery is our quintessential rebel for pushing us past our own limiting beliefs and behaviors.
