In what is likely to be a week full of weak economic data, the European Commission's measure for economic sentiment in the Eurozone recorded its biggest monthly drop in history (Bloomberg chart below). Meanwhile, a big question remains what will be asked by public sector creditors in return for bailout funds. Bloomberg is reporting, in Germany, this may include a restriction on corporate dividends and buybacks. A similar question will be asked about emergency support for emerging economies, especially if thus includes bilateral debt relief. #economy #markets #europe #EU #bailouts #buybacks #eurozone …see more

“Why are you starting the podcast?” my friend Cathlean  asked this weekend. I realize I didn't have a good answer, beyond a few responses like: share my voice, learn a new platform, partner with brands. For context, Cathlean and I were both Resident Assistants during our time at UC Berkeley. We both shared a similar background as low income students who entered college with little leadership experience. We started talking about how natural and easy it is for us to find mentors today, yet a couple years back, the idea of outreaching and meeting people was both daunting and scary. What Cathlean’s question made me realize was that starting the podcast is not about me. It is about professionals who were like Cathlean and me a couple years back. For young people and entrepreneurs from underprivileged background who didn’t grow up learning how find mentors or build a business. Thanks for forcing me to rethink the catalyst behind the podcast, Cathlean. Looking forward to having you as my first listener of the Zero to Infinity Podcast!  More details on the podcasts in the comment if you are interested in learning more. …see more

There could be a lot more imagination in how books are sold. -You could pay more for one with a celebrity reading it. -You could pay more to access podcast series that expands on the book and ensures it's up to date. -You could pay more for an abridged version. -You could pay to rent a digital copy for a short time. -You could pay more to access an online forum where people discuss the book -You could buy the first chapter of the book for $1 and see if you like it, before paying more to unlock each chapter. -You could pay to get a physical copy and the audiobook -You could pay more for an online training course based on the book, with live sessions, groupwork, and mentorship In fact the idea of books as complete items that don't link out to any media, that are not updated for years, on which you can readily see how others think, it's a remarkably outdated idea. If we consider the role of the book is not based around the physicality of the book, but the need to be inspired, to learn, to change how you think, books become very different commercial propositions. I may try an explore these false limitations in my next book. …see more

Weird people think Uber's $1.2bn loss is surprising. Most new wave companies burn hoards of cash and hope to escape the gravitational pull of economics and into "space" where they are so big that gravity doesn't apply and they self sustain. Companies like Uber, Airbnb, Amazon either become the largest businesses imaginable, or crash harder than the world has ever known.

I’ve been plagued with scam calls these past few weeks and decided to end it once and for all... So yesterday I received the same call I have been receiving for the past few weeks asking me if I had recently been in a car accident. Previously I have either said no, told them to go away (or words to that effect) or hung up on them. But the calls persisted. So I took a different tack yesterday and the conversation went like this... Caller: we believe you have recently had a car accident? Me: yes that’s correct Caller: ok could you tell me when the accident occurred and where? Me: it was last week and it was way up North Caller: could you tell me about the driver of the other car? Me: sure he was a male, quite chubby, long grey beard and was wearing a red coat. Said he was in the area delivering gifts Caller: ok did you get his name? Me: yes it was Nicolas Claus Caller: and what was the name and model of his vehicle? Me: well it was an open top with runners instead of wheels Caller: erm, ok do you know the make, model and engine size? Me: not sure of the make or model but it was powered by several reindeer... At this point the scammer hangs up. I suspect I won’t be hearing from them any time soon though... Merry Christmas everyone! #scammers …see more

For #ThrowbackThursday, 5 days in #Somaliland. Soaking up the privilege of observing a master at work: photojournalist Lynsey Addario capturing images for our National Geographic project on #maternalmortality. Having Lynsey teach me a cool iPhone photo filter trick on the night before she left was amazing enough. But then, on the way home from dinner that night, riding shotgun with Madame Edna Adan Ismail in her trusty Tata 4-wheel drive, the living legend who built herself a hospital In Hargeisa began to sing. "Though we ain't got a barrel of money...." I chimed in, "Maybe we're ragged and funny.....” "But we're traveling along, singing a song, side by side." In a moment like this, you suspect you must've done something right in your life to earn such a transcendent experience. You realize that no matter how many curves life has thrown you, or how many challenges may lie ahead, you are #blessedandhighlyfavored. #natgeotraveller #amomenttoremember #globalhealth …see more
