Good morning. Assessing the reason for the move up in US yields -- both the levels and the steepening of curves -- is as complicated to ascertain with confidence as what Friday’s surprising jobs number means for the economy and policy making. It’s particularly relevant for a Federal Reserve policy meeting this week facing the “real vs head fake” question. Where the Fed ends up will depend in part on the depth of its "insurance" mindset. #economy #markets #yields #federalreserve #investing #equities #assetallocation #fed #investmentmanagement #centralbanks #economy #markets …see more

The surge in emerging market bond issuance illustrates how Federal Reserve policies have opened wide the debt markets to those not having direct support. Per the data complied by Gramercy (thank you), the $327 billion in issuance YTD compares to $278 bn last year and $292 bn in 2018. The good news is that this massive bond issuance has allowed developing countries to avoid liquidity problems/other short-term problems turn into solvency/longer-term problems. Less good is the encouragement to cuspy (in terms of liquidity/solvency) borrowers to over-rely on debt financing. #markets #debt #em #emergingmarkets #fed #centralbanks #federalreserve #gramercy @gramercy …see more

When he served his two terms as the first President of the United States, many people wanted him to stay on as king. Who would turn that down? George Washington did. He knew that the future of the United States depended on him showing an example of someone not wanting absolute power. He is loved. …see more

Podcasting with Tyra Banks. So many insights. "Perfect is Boring" , great title for the new book she and her mom Carolyn London just published. The way she says "yes" to something is if it has 2 out of 3 of, "fierce" (aspirational, impactful), "fun" (has a comedic element), "heart" (she has a passion for it).  Plus, afterwards she did a favor for my kids I am forever grateful for.  Thanks Tyra! …see more

#EQ #QuestionOfTheDay: Can you be too emotionally intelligent? I'd say, not really. Qualities like empathy can be harmful when let out of control. (Think of those empathetic people who give, give, give...to the point that they completely burn themselves out.) But that's not emotional intelligence. It's just emotional. Emotional intelligence is the ability to make emotions work for you, instead of against you. It still motivates you to show empathy where possible--but not to the point where you harm yourself in the process. (Of course, finding that balance isn't always easy.) But this doesn't mean a high EQ is always "good." Some use the ability to understand and manage emotions to manipulate others for selfish gain. (You might hear this referred to as "the dark side" of emotional intelligence.) So, what's the best defense against being manipulated by those with a high EQ? Work to increase your own. That way, you'll have better chances of recognizing when others use fear, deceit, or other nefarious means to persuade and influence. The takeaway: You can't really have too much emotional intelligence. But if developed without ethics, it can be extremely dangerous. …see more

Several times a day I'm forced to turn off an ad blocker in order to read an article. At that point, the page grinds to a halt, downloads endless trackers, and promptly covers the screen with all manner of hopeless video ads and pathetic banner ads. Such actions likely earn the publication about $0.0001. It will bring zero benefit to the advertisers. The trackers will accomplish nothing. I'll never understand why we've not been able to resolve this. I'll never understand why there isn't significant funding, energy and interest in resolving this. Yes I know about Blendle, etc etc etc …see more

Remember my Uber, Airbnb, Facebook quote. I think this thought is even more profound and helpful for the future. If 2015 was about thin companies, 2016 is about companies who unleash the power of a new paradigm. Who don't know the assumptions that others made. Maybe the strengths of the past are weaknesses. And vice versa. …see more

2 out of 3 people don’t keep a calendar. Is that a surprise to you? It isn’t to me. Too often, people don’t realize how important it is to plan every minute of your day. By deciding what we’re going to do and when we’re going to do it, we can actually know the difference between traction and distraction. You can’t call something a distraction unless you know what it is distracting you from. It doesn’t matter whether you’re planning to relax and play video games or finish up a work assignment. The things you plan to accomplish should be on your schedule. You’ll be amazed at how much time you actually have in your day. In order to be Indistractable, we must plan ahead. Here’s a test: What does your day look like tomorrow? 👇 #Indistractable #Productivity #Planning …see more
