Today is a big day for four CEOs of the most powerful companies in the world: Amazon 's Jeff Bezos, Apple 's Tim Cook, Facebook 's Mark Zuckerburg, and Google 's Sundar Pichai. Each of these men will be answering questions from U.S. lawmakers. And each will try to defend their companies' business practices. In advance of the hearing, each executive was given the opportunity to present a written statement. Both Tim Cook's and Sundar Pichai's statements were a tad over 1,300 words long. Mark Zuckerberg's was more than double that, coming in just short of 2,800 words (complete with subheadings). But Jeff Bezos's statement blows the others out of the water: It's a whopping 4,540 words long. As I read Bezos's statement this morning, I couldn't ignore the lessons it teaches in emotional intelligence--both for good and potentially for evil. I wonder how much of the notion of startups, innovation, "everything is so exciting and new", "look at these unicorns and valuations"...... is actually just the result of the fact interest rates haven't been this low in 5000 years, money is basically free & nobody has ANY idea where to invest it. …see more
When steam engines were invented, despite directly producing incredible amounts of rotary force, for about the first 20 years they were used primarily to pump water uphill to drive water wheels. This is the mistake made with most digital transformation. We make the least imaginative change, the fastest, least risky and easiest to get through accounting alteration, by bolting on the new to what we have. Next time you see a process with new technology ponder this. Are we adding new technology like oil, or rebuilding around the power of the new. It's 99% the former. This is all in my book. …see more
Years ago, friend and former Netflix colleague, Robert Hatta headed back to Ohio to work on the burgeoning startup scene. I used to give him a good-natured, hard time about it. Robert, consider this my public 'it looks like you were right' apology.
Congratulations to Dr. Patrice Harris, the first #AfricanAmerican woman to be inaugurated as President of the American Medical Association . In this 400th Anniversary of the first Africans’ presence on American shores, to survive centuries of unimaginable brutality and rise above ongoing barriers and challenges, Dr. Harris truly is our ancestors’ wildest dream. May we all strive to follow her example, in ways big or small. Thanks for this uplifting post, Erika Jefferson, MBA ! …see more
Some great advice from the Universe as I prepare to head to New York City, for my first formal job interview since returning to America in May of 2016. It only took two years, a boatload of patience, more than a handful of dark nights of the soul, a string of fortuitous freelance gigs and plenty of love and support from family and friends to get here. I actually feel great about myself, my expertise, and my vision for my future. If this job is not mine, I've already proven I can hang in until the next chapter begins. A habit is a behavior or impulse to do something with little or no conscious thought. About half of what we do every single day is out of habit. This means that the types of habits we form have profound impacts on our lives. How organizations can help users form productive, healthy habits is something I covered in-depth in my first book, Hooked. I recently had the pleasure of appearing on the Inside VOICE Podcast where I spoke to Keri R. about how we can use voice technology in a way that helps us live happier and more fulfilling lives. I’ve included a link to the episode in the comments section below! Which habits help you live a more productive life? #HabitFormation #BehaviorChange #Hooked #Productivity #Health …see more

I have found that some ads always bring out a deeper message in a short span of time! This particular one made me smile. It shows an old man making his son realize that there are some things, like love, which can be delivered only in person. Today is about celebrating the bond between a brother & sister and to take a pause in our fast paced life today and create new memories. Let us take a moment to cherish our #loved ones.
