Practice with a self-imposed constraint If you’re still questioning the value of constraints on your creativity, try a self-imposed one that’s easy to manage: time. When you have an important project to do but are feeling overwhelmed, set a timer for 25 minutes, work until the bell rings, and then take a 5-minute break. Working in short bursts means you’ll dig in, focus, avoid multitasking—and make progress. Adopt situational and environmental constraints Now that face-to-face meetings and events are on hold, we’ve all figured out how to connect virtually. My friends, colleagues, and peers many probably remember how bullish I was about Calm early days despite the head start that Headspace had in the mindfulness category. I had done a deep dive “product analysis” on both companies early days and despite the fact that both had great products, and that Headspace arguably had more modern design, I bet big on Calm due to some superior product experiences that Calm offered (e.g. flexibility to participate in multiple programs simultaneously, the quality and relevance of its contents). Calm from early on put users’ needs / constraints in the center of the product design and development and that’s why now they are #1 app in meditation, with over $1bn valuations, and people like LeBron behind the company. Do you know the feeling when 1500 hours of hard work is _beginning_ to pay off? I occasionally report about my chess journey and how I try to understand the language of A.I. through playing chess. Well, it seems my pursuit is not in vain. After sitting for 8 hours at a chess competition (and those extra 2000 for preparation), I won a bronze medal at a local tournament. I took part in the same competition last year and barely gained a few points. At that time, I had about an 500-hours investment in chess. The 1000-hour difference shows not only on the final scores but also in my relationship with A.I. While I was simply flabbergasted when I saw Leela Chess Zero making an exciting move last year, I gradually start to understand these movements and their "motives" now. It's an incredibly exciting journey!
