Individuals share about 99.97 percent of their DNA and only the remaining 0.03 percent is responsible for the differences in skin, hair or eye color, height, shoe size or sunspots. Scientists discovered somewhat recently that our bodies also metabolize drugs differently so it would make sense to prescribe medications based on the knowledge hidden in our DNA. In some cases, physicians already do that. Here’s what you need to know about pharmacogenomics and the future of prescription drugs. #medicine #genetics #personalizedmedicine #pharmacology #genetictesting …see more

I often write about digital tattoos. For one of my recent posts, Dr. David Albert, founder of Alivecor, left a question about an interesting issue: "Electronics need power and wireless communication needs significant power so they need batteries or really efficient power scavenging. I have not seen practical examples of digital tattoos that have more than a very short ""skin life""."" Have you come across solutions for that? #technology #design …see more

This week's banks earnings sharpen the Wall Street/Main Street contrast. Below the increasing contrast is the reality of what exceptional central bank policies can and can't do: Can open financial markets for record corporate issuance and bank fees. Can't ensure economic and wage growth. #economy #markets #banks #banking #centralbanks …see more

Two takeaways from the daily COVID-19 US data as reported by Bloomberg. Infections/hospitalizations in the new "hot spots" continue to rise ... Making New York, a state that has made major progress in dealing with its outbreak, float the idea of measures to slow visitors from hotspots. (I purposely did not comment on the football reference, and not because it wouldn't saddened me if, indeed, the NFL and college seasons were cancelled. I have missed watching sports tremendously. But it's an insignificant disruption compared to how many lives and how many livelihoods have been adversely impacted, and in such a significant manner.) #covid19 #covid #coronavirus #markets …see more

As a follow up US jobless claims came somewhat worse than expected at 1.88 million, as did continuing claims at 21.49 mm. Confirms that partial re-openings are helping to alleviate the serious economic/social challenges, but only very marginally. We love small, easy wins. Email is the epitome of that. According to a study conducted by Professor Teresa Amibile from Harvard Business School, people love making progress. Have you ever wondered why we love making to-do lists? It’s because we love checking items off that list. When we feel like we’re making progress, we get motivated. It’s what moves us forward toward reaching a particular goal. All of this translates to how we handle our emails. Managing our inboxes makes us feel accomplished. Every time you respond to a message or get a response back from someone else, you’re moving one step forward. We feel good because it proves that we’ve gotten something done. Discover what is unique about you, the way you think and process information, to create systems to optimize your performance. Take the assessment to identify your Productivity Style. Fun and fascinating Saturday read for all you armchair linguists & homebody historians (like me) about the Chinese origins of the 2 words used for tea in the world. "Cha" is from Mandarin Chinese, and has been adopted by many many languages. "Tea" is from the Min-nan dialect spoken in Fujian province and Taiwan, and made its way around the world thanks to Dutch traders. Both words are used frequently on a daily basis here in Taiwan today, where both dialects (Mandarin & Min-nan, referred to simply as "Taiwanese" in English) of Chinese are spoken by most people. …see more

I’m no Greta, but while I’m extremely happy to move into a brand new condo tower in Miami it’s absolutely nuts they’ve no system for recycling and the 1000 car car garage has zero ability to charge electric cars. Neither of these notions were new when the building was conceived and this tower should be around for 100 years
