I don't know if you guys are aware but last week Pilot closed a series B round and they got about 40 Million. They were AI bookkeeping only and now they are entering the tax space. That's really big news. If you're aware of Scalefactor , they are doing AI bookkeeping and tax as well. What does this mean for the accounting industry? It actually gives me great ANGST! It kind of freaks me out because it means that real tech money is coming into the accounting space. A lot of you may wonder why I've been so engaged Botkeeper. It's because they want to partner with firms NOT take them over! We are more likely to believe if people dress the part. White coat for doctors, pin stripe or navy suits for finance people. Shouldn’t we look for their qualifications and experience, or more importantly, what they say and do? Would you rather I wear a suit, a sari or a leather jacket in my videos? Or am I ok to wear a colourful top? Does it matter? #communication #expertfallacy …see more

How do we manage the distraction from our phones? The first step is to remove the apps you no longer need. Ask yourself the critical question, ā€œwhich external triggers on my phone are serving me and which am I serving?ā€ When I answered this question for myself, I uninstalled apps that didn’t align with my values. I kept apps for learning and staying healthy. I removed games and news apps with blaring alerts and stress-inducing headlines. How your phone ends up looking will ultimately depend on your values, but whatever the end result is, make sure the apps that remain align with how you want to spend time on your phone. #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Productivity …see more

How can we control the internal and external triggers that lead us to distraction? The first step is to recognize that these sensations are completely normal. There are three big tactics to keep in mind as we seek to deal with these uncomfortable sensations in a way that leads us to traction as opposed to distraction: - Reimagining the trigger - Reimagining our tasks - Reimagining our temperament Check out the other insights I offer in a conversation about Indistractable with Alison Beard on the Harvard Business Review Ideacast at the link in the comments below! As parents, we live in a world where digital distraction seems inescapable. Even tech titans like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have outlined strategies limiting their children’s screen time. We want to raise children who are smart and focused. In the future, there will be two types of people: Those who let their attention and lives be controlled and coerced by others and those who can proudly call themselves ā€œIndistractable!ā€ Being Indistractable is the most important skill of the 21st century—and it’s one that many parents fail to teach their kids. I recently published an article on CNBC that covers this topic. Be sure to check it out at the link in the comments and share your thoughts on this with me below! šŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡ #Indistractable #CNBC #Psychology #HumanBehavior #Parenting …see more

Stick to your knitting! Focus on your core competency, and outsource the rest! If you want to succeed at something, you need deep expertise! We’ve been hearing these conventional wisdoms for years. And the message generally boils down to the same thing: if you want to be successful, as an individual or a business, you have to specialise. But here’s the thing. In a world that’s increasingly characterised by disruption and unpredictability, isn’t it time we started taking more of a generalist approach? My latest LinkedIn #Elewa article is titled "The Rise of the Generalist in an uncertain world" and tackles this hot topic. What do you think? How do we balance hiring specialists and generalists? What would your advice be to those starting off their careers or looking to re-invent themselves? #generalists #specialists #business #innovation Stafford Masie Peter du Toit John Sanei Helen Nicholson Allon Raiz Zachariah George Vusi Thembekwayo …see more

Attention, leaders: Have you lost your voice? As a professional communicator, I rely on my voice as a tool. It helps me articulate my offering, communicate with and connect me to others, and supports my values and perspective. Of course, ā€œvoiceā€ extends to all forms of communication, whether spoken or written and collectively makes up your personal brand. Ideally, you have a consistent voice, no matter the medium. This is especially true when you’re trying to build your brand and your reputation as a thought leader. Consider then, for a moment, if maybe you’ve lost your voice… ā–ŗ Do you struggle with having and maintaining a clear point of view in your communications? ā–ŗ Does the subject matter of your content vary dramatically, causing folks to scratch their heads? ā–ŗ When someone meets you in person, are they surprised because you somehow seem different? These are all red flags that you may be losing your voice—and your ability to communicate effectively. Regularly sharing your unique point of view in those few areas where you have expertise will position you as an expert, eliminate confusion, differentiate you from your competitors, and draw others—employees, clients, partners, and investors—to you. #leadership #communication …see more

Job hunt CANNOT be based only on feelings. Get data to back up your efforts: ā˜šŸ¼Organize it! Prepare an Excel/Monday/Huntr dedicated to your job search ā˜šŸ¼Document every company you applied for with the application date and position details. ā˜šŸ¼Document every rejection or process ā˜šŸ¼Track the source you applied through Maybe when you apply to Team Lead roles you get rejected but for senior positions, you get to an interview? Maybe when you apply through friends you get to phone interview more easily? Job search IS a job. And just like most high-tech jobs, data is crucial. Don’t ignore your feelings. Of course not. Intuition goes a long way. But your gut instincts can mislead you, and intuition may fail you. It happens. Data’s job is to make sure you get it right. I felt exuberant the last few days! Watching my awesome team come together to solve major problems collaboratively, deliberately, and passionately was the best gift. It reminded me of how important it’s to work with the best talent and how critical it is to love the types of problems you’re solving. It’s so awesome to see how fast the team is learning and growing, and how tight they are together; they put the best practices of product and design in work every day. I’m proud of what the team is doing and can’t wait to see the outcome of them on our products and services. #customerobsessed #productmanager #designer #designthinking2019 #productmanagement #bestteams #bestproducts wonolo inc …see more

Mothers are the best gift of nature! On the Mother’s Day that’s heavily celebrated and not enough for even 1% of what any woman and Mom does for her family and kids, reading a piece from a man who recently lost his wife, the mother of his two sons, reminded me that these types of days are exceptionally hard for many, many, many people! And with the power of social media, it only got worse. I want to send my energy and love to all the kids out there who lost their mothers, to all the kids whose mothers couldn’t be there in their lives for various reasons, and to all the kids who didn’t have good relationships with their Mom because of many different social and cultural barriers. I also want to send my prayers to all the men who lost their partner and their best friend. Finally, I want to send my love and best wishes to those who want to have kids and so far couldn’t for biological, financial, or social reasons. Happy Mother’s Day to those who celebrate! Each day is a precious gift. Enjoy it to the max! #happymothersday …see more

This research is awesome! A must read for "Working Moms", "their families", "Moms on the edge of deciding to stay home or go to work", and everyone else in between. The groundbreaking results of the Harvard's research shows that:Ā  1) The "daughters" of employed mothers often perform better in their eventual careers than the daughters of stay-at-home moms. 2) They wind up just as "happy" in adulthood as the children of moms who stayed home. 3)Ā The "sons" of employed mothers hold significantly more egalitarian gender attitudes.Ā  #workingmomsĀ #womenleadersĀ #worklifebalance …see more
