It was great catching up with my former colleague from McKinsey & Company , Rebecca Wei . She’s now president of Christie’s in Asia and oversees an amazing portfolio of artwork from around the region and the world. Today she showed me around their galleries in Hong Kong where they are exhibiting paintings by Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Jackson Pollack, David Hockney, and so many more artists who shaped the world of modern art over the past century. So much of the potential of the modern world is limited and slowed because deep down almost all of the modern world is constructed on digital foundations built in the 1970s when the cost of storing data was high. Much of the modern world is limited because we assume calculations are expensive* The other lost potential is because our culture, working processes and approach to work is constructed on the notion that workplaces are factories, where we need human cogs in machines, where output correlates with time, where conformity is vital, where we efficiency beats imagination, and where value is created in the same place and time as each other. For #MondayMotivation , I think I've finally figured out how I summoned the will to start working out at 6 a.m. Edna Adan Ismail provided the inspiration. During my June trip to #Somaliland , for the January 2019 National Geographic Global Health issue, she was always one step ahead of me—surveying the fruit trees on her farm, piloting her trusty Tata four-wheel drive, or checking on patients at her hospital. But I didn't expect to also be left in the dust in Manhattan! When we reunited in September, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers 2018 event, I was still struggling to keep up. Madame Edna landed in New York on a Sunday, and had a full slate of conference calls and meetings before I saw her on Monday afternoon. From there, she participated in several panels, dinners, and a visit to ANCIENT SONG DOULA SERVICES in Brooklyn before spending all day Wednesday at the Goalkeepers event--and then graced the stage for the concluding remarks. Madame Edna is 81 years old, and if I develop half of her stamina, poise and vitality by the time I'm 60, I will be very lucky. Societies tend to develop “social antibodies” — defenses against new harmful behaviors. Cigarettes are an example of this. Smoking in public became taboo over the span of just one generation after social conventions changed. Legal restrictions played a part, but a shift in the perception of smokers — from cultured to crude — laid the groundwork for public support of smoking bans. Similarly, the remedy to digital distraction may be developing new norms that make it socially undesirable to check one’s phone in the company of others. Like cigarettes, our personal technology use can become a bad habit. People enter a zone when they use their gadgets. Checking email or scrolling through Facebook can be intoxicating and disorienting. Tech makers design these products using the same psychology that makes slot machines addictive.
