Both Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates recently weighed in with their thoughts, and they're almost polar opposite reactions. On Friday, Musk tweeted: "The coronavirus panic is dumb" In contrast, Gates said the following in an article recently posted on his blog: "In the past week, COVID-19 has started to behave a lot like the once-in-a-century pathogen we've been worried about. I hope it's not that bad, but we should assume that it will be until we know otherwise." You can really see how stark the contrast is of these two responses when you place them side by side: Musk: "The coronavirus panic is dumb" Gates: "I hope it's not that bad, but we should assume that it will be until we know otherwise." Musk and Gates both possess brilliant minds. But while one of these responses is potentially dangerous, the other promotes a rational, "safety-first" mentality--and could possibly lead to saving millions of lives. Excellent article by the Wall Street Journal’s Chip Cutter on Amazon’s announcement to invest in training its current employees to learn technical skills that will enable them to take on new jobs within the company. There’s so much research and talk about how automation and technology will eliminate jobs. Companies now need to think about how to proactively help workers prepare for the changes ahead. And it wouldn’t hurt if government and educational institutions step up and play a role as well. #technology #employment #jobs #automation #training …see more

Thank you, Enjoli Daley , for writing one of the best definitions of the term #whiteprivilege I have ever read in my 57 years of life. Though many white Americans are tired of hearing about it, it still needs to be explained. Because many black Americans bear the brunt of it almost every day. In the early 2000s, the news was full of stories of a coming jobs apocalypse: Globalization had come for manufacturing. Now it was coming for white-collar jobs too. A decade and a half later, the numbers are in: The apocalypse never happened. In The New York Times today, I report on new research from Adam Ozimek , the chief economist at Upwork . Adam revisited some of the most influential research on offshoring, Alan S. Blinder's 2007 paper that categorized jobs by how easily they could be sent offshore. He found that there was no relationship between how "offshorable" a job was and subsequent job growth. Companies I talked to said that offshoring proved more difficult than they initially expected. Blinder's analysis wasn't necessarily wrong -- technology really was making it easier to do those jobs remotely. But instead of (or in addition to) moving jobs offshore, companies are moving them to other, cheaper parts of the U.S. That offers a tantalizing possibility: that remote work could be a force for geographic convergence, pushing back against the widening economic divide between big cities and everywhere else. Will that happen? We'll see. In the meantime, check out my story in today's Times. #economy #offshoring #hiring #jobs …see more

While I am a two-time author, consultant, and speaker, I was an entrepreneur first. In fact, many of the insights I offer in my writing are a direct result of the experience I gained while founding and operating multiple companies in the tech space. In a recent conversation with John Lee Dumas on his EOFire podcast, I had the opportunity to discuss my entrepreneurial journey at length. JLD and I spoke about the ups and downs associated with starting a business and some key takeaways that I had for his listeners, many of which are tied to my latest book, Indistractable.
