Way to go Kelly Grier ! This is so AWESOME!!!! Not a lot of people realize how small SMC (Saint Mary's College) is. I graduated with 30 accounting majors, my total class was like 400. It is an all woman's college! I know for a fact attending a woman's liberal arts college had a material affect on my career! Kelly graduated 3 years ahead of me. #CPALEADERSHIP #Accounting #woman #rockstar #radicalcpa #leadership #womanscollege #liberalarts #CPA #EY #SMC …see more
Oliver Sacks, the great neurologist, observed that in forty years of medical practice, he had found only two types of non-pharmaceutical therapy helpful: music and gardens. I’ve spent the past few years of my semi-retired life reading - in my third floor balcony amongst my plants (which I am sure talk to the trees that surround my balcony) - while listening to music. On Sundays, I try to read non-finance starting with a wonderful newsletter/site called Brain Pickings by Maria Popova. What do you do to maintain #mentalhealth ? #sundaythoughts …see more
We are not “addicted” to technology - and it is dangerous and highly problematic to say so. I’m fascinated by the way technology influences, informs, and even designs our behavior. I am aware of the ethical implications of technology’s permeation into our daily lives. Like any superpower, there is a level of responsibility that should come with building as well as using technology. While it is easy to blame the companies making the products that distract us, we must be cautious so that we avoid giving them any more power than they deserve. While the fact that these products exist isn’t our fault, managing their use is our responsibility. I’ve worked in this space since 2008 and have become acutely aware that this affects my own life too. I was checking my phone while spending time with my daughter. However, the idea that we are all “addicted” to technology is rubbish.. Addiction is a pathology and it’s not the same thing as overuse. In my upcoming book, Indistractible (link in comments!), I reveal the Achilles’ heal of distraction that I learned as an industry insider. The fact is, we’re much more powerful than we think. #Hooked #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Technology …see more
My professional career has coincided with the rise of Facebook - one of the most decidedly habit-forming applications ever to exist. Numbers suggest that Facebook’s users collectively spend over 1 Billion hours on Facebook... per day. After growing and selling multiple startups, I began to notice a trend among the rising group of apps and technologies like Facebook. These apps were not just hoping and waiting for users to return, but were rather actively trying to facilitate behavior change to bring users back for repeat usage. This realization led me down a path of research, teaching at Stanford, and writing Hooked, a step-by-step guide on how to create habit-forming products. In my book, I describe the internal trigger as the basis for products becoming an important part in users’ daily lives. #Hooked #Indistractable #InternalTriggers #BehaviorChange …see more

Leadership means a lot of things to a lot of people, but at its essence, it’s about helping others. And today, in honor of Veterans Day, I’d like to give a major shout-out to the many family members, friends, and other brave men and women who have served in the military. Thank you for your service, selflessly giving yourself and time, and demonstrating what it means to be a leader. And for those who haven’t had the privilege of serving in the Armed Forces, I challenge you to regularly ask yourself: How can I be of service to others? When we approach our lives and careers with this perspective, we’ll naturally find ways to provide value and assistance to others and truly lead by example. #leadership #servantleadership #VeteransDay #veterans …see more

Another example why A.I. has a primetime during COVID-19.
