The real estate industry's failure to use ANY new technology is the most baffling to me. Homes go unsold for years because nobody could be bothered to take interior photos. Even floorplans can be made for free in apps.

In this excellent article in the New York Times, British Airways pilot and author Mark Vanhoenacker reflects on his experience flying the iconic 747, both as passenger as a young boy, and later as pilot. The plane is slated for imminent retirement. Mark is the author of the bestselling book, Skyfaring: A Journey With a Pilot, which I spoke to him about on my podcast two years ago: …see more
The living room for most was always the largest room in the house and the most social. For millennia the focal point was the fireplace/hearth, and you knew it, because furniture pointed at it, heat was everything. The TV changed that and central heating was invented, the new dominant feature was a window onto the world and shared experiences. A new thing to point furniture at. I've not had a TV for years. Screens are on laps, in hands, they are consumed by one at a time, shared experiences but with others far away. So what becomes the focus of the modern day living room? We don't really know. It's one of those little moments that shines a light into the slightly confused time we live in. Life in the modern era isn't that complex or fast changing, it's just a bit lost. …see more
It's amazing how often people make very precise claims from very precise data, that's measured in very imprecise ways, not controlled for variables, collected with poor sampling, or that actuality means something totally different. My "favorite" one is using Google Trends data to show increased sales, or popularity, or market share, when it's typically more measure of curiosity divided by existing knowledge. Or this piece which somehow uses website traffic (??) to announce precisely that visits to Soul Cycle are down ( during the summer holidays) https://lnkd.in/eSxeG4m …see more

Charlotte philanthropist Hugh McColl says his wife Jane Spratt McColl has always had her own money, which he jokingly referred to as her "bailout fund." He says Mrs. McColl recently wrote a very large check to support Planned Parenthood , and she didn't ask him what he thought about it. McColl says that in 2017, many non-profits still make a huge mistake by assuming that when a large donation comes from a married couple, the final decision was made by the husband. Organizations need to make a concerted effort to acknowledge the source of the donation and directly thank the proper party.
