Things are changing at Starbucks . Yesterday, the coffee giant released its latest SEC filing. It began with a five-page letter "to all Starbucks stakeholders," and was signed by the company's CEO and president Kevin Johnson. According to the letter, the company is laying the foundation for a "transformational phase" that will introduce a new store format known as "Starbucks Pickup." "Starbucks Pickup is tailored to customers who prefer to order ahead and pay through the Starbucks mobile app for pick-up, or those who want their Starbucks delivered to them by placing an order through Uber Eats," the letter explains. What makes this idea so radical is the fact that Starbucks built much of its brand on the ability to become what former CEO Howard Schultz described as the unique "third place," the place between work and home, that customers could go to meet friends, get work done, or simply hang out. Which leads us to the most powerful line in the letter, one that shows a major shift in strategy. Mario Salerno is a small business owner who owns a number of apartment buildings in Brooklyn, NY. Like many property owners, Salerno has recently faced a crushing problem: tenants who said they could not afford to pay their rent. After giving it some thought, Salerno did something big to help: He waived his tenants' rent for the month of April, 2020. That's somewhere between 200-300 tenants, in 80 apartments. Although Salerno declined to share how much money he would lose due to not collecting rent in April, the NYT estimated he was likely foregoing hundreds of thousands of dollars in rental income. Some may take Salerno's gesture for granted. "Great that he has enough money to do that," they might think. After all, Salerno, a life-long resident of the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, also owns a gas station and body shop, which his father opened in 1959. But Salerno's gesture is more than a kind deed. It's a lesson in emotional intelligence--and we can all learn from it. To combat the shoulds and liberate yourself from their tenacious clutches, the first step is to use the three-step evaluation process to test some of the assumptions that are behind guilt. Think about the fears and anxieties that are driving you (guilt is the manifestation of both) and then ask yourself, “What is the worst thing that could happen? Is it real? Is it true?”
If instagram is not unbearable already, it soon will be. I've no idea why so many apps chose to monetize by cramming as many ads in as possible while decreasing organic use, and then selling user data, rather than offering paid premium models with fewer/no ads. …see more
To me, nobody has the same exquisite combination of brilliant thinking and delightful writing as @ Rory Sutherland  , another delightful piece.  I just wish it went on further.
While Voice control as seen with Alexa, Siri etc is clearly a big "trend" on display at CES. Do people actually want this? Same is true for conversational commerce. What do you think? Will things change as it gets better?
Our industry is at risk of exploiting the women's movement, and it threatens #equality for all. Watch the last few minutes of my recent talk to global brand marketers, as I argue that faux-feminism in #marketing creates a dangerous illusion that the world is more equitable than it really is, and what #agencies and #brands can do. What is the impact when brands use #feminism in #advertising while paying women less than men, penalizing them for maternity leave, maintaining unrealistic beauty standards, or lacking female #executives and board members? Full video (and more resources) in the comments. Thank you to Chief Marketer for inviting me to speak this past week in New York! …see more

Getting my battery seriously re-charged through a conversation with Stephanie Arnold , Managing Editor of the Arkrepublic online media startup and former Audience Engagement Editor for the Philadelphia Media Group. The event is sponsored by the Online News Association and American City Business Journals here in the City of Charlotte , and it's been a godsend. And if you stay in the journalism game long enough, you quickly realize that there are now only about three degrees of separation between you and any other journalist you might encounter. ACBJ's Vice President for Content Jon Wile and I have the Detroit Free Press in common. And Stephanie Arnold and I know at least a dozen of the same people, following her years working at companies like the Virginian Pilot Newspaper and the Philadelphia Inquirer . Stephanie is sharing some incredibly valuable tips and insights about how journalists can integrate new multimedia and online tools into their work. The difference between traction and distraction isn’t the activity in question, it’s intent. If you find yourself doing something you intended to, you’re experiencing traction. If you find yourself doing something you weren’t intending to, you’re experiencing distraction. Psychologists have verified that if we plan ahead, if you decide what you plan to do with your time, you become far more likely to follow through. By simply planning what we want to do with our time, we can overcome many of our distractions. Don’t leave any empty space on your calendar. If you have white space on your calendar, somebody is going to plan your time for you, unless you’ve decided in advance what you want to do with it. What are some of the things you schedule time for? I’ve included a link to the schedule making tool on my website in the comments below! …see more
Do you feel like annoying things are always happening to you? It might be your #mindset . When we're negative, we tend to adopt a victim mentality, like the world is out to get us. Every setback is viewed as the end of the world, and every hiccup throws us into a tizzy. If this sounds familiar, take a beat and instead, try practicing #positivity . Shift your perception of how you think about yourself, and change your story from that of a victim to that of a hero. And if you discover that your harshest critic is you, then ease up a bit, acknowledge that no one is perfect, and try a little self-compassion. Another benefit of being an optimist? They tend to adopt a growth mindset or one in which they believe they can—and will—improve, and see every opportunity as a chance to grow and learn. Plus, this attitude helps remind them to be grateful and pay attention to all the good things in their lives, which makes forming grudges nearly impossible. My parting advice on grudges is this: Life doesn’t always turn out the way we want it to. By changing your perspective and being more adaptable, you'll up the odds that the occasional career slight, off-hand remark, or petty annoyance won't plague you. #leadership #communication #connection #softskills *Link to Part 1 in comments …see more
