Dead silence is never an appropriate response in the wake of a crisis. Never. Ever. When the scandal broke about Cambridge Analytica and the massive misuse of personal information on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg explained to the New York Times that he needed time to figure out what to say.  Bunk. These are the points Facebook could have addressed within 30 minutes of the news: 1. We are sorry for the harm we caused our followers. 2. We are figuring out how we can make amends. 3. We are working on a plan to make sure this never happens again. 3. We will have an update for you on (date). Rinse and repeat every time more information is available to be released to the public and to shareholders. Even if you're not Facebook, all companies need a template for a crisis communications statement. That allows for quick messages to be pushed out in an hour or less. Four days is an eternity in the age of social media. And when a company fails to fill the void following a crisis of this scale, we will fill it for them. I want to share a quick personal story... Not so long ago, my after work routine looked like this: After a grueling day, I’d sit on the couch and zone out for hours. I'd unwind with a cold pint of ice cream. I knew the ice cream, and the sitting, were probably a bad idea, but I told myself this was my well-deserved “reward” for working so hard. Psychological researchers have a name for this phenomenon: it’s called “ego depletion.” The theory is that willpower is connected to a limited reserve of mental energy, and once you run out of that energy, you’re more likely to lose self-control. ...but new research suggests that we’ve been thinking about willpower all wrong.
