Everything that you plan to do is traction and every action that is not what you planned to do is distraction. Notice that both words, “traction” and “distraction,” end in “action.” This reminds us that these two are not things that happen to us, but rather things that we do. How do you combat distraction? #Indistractable #Distraction #HumanBehavior #BehaviorDesign P.S. If you pre-order my upcoming book, Indistractable, I'll send you the PDF version NOW! I recently had the pleasure of doing a Q&A at General Assembly! I spoke at length about the topics that inspired me to write my upcoming book, Indistractable (link in comments!). Despite technology and external factors taking much of the blame for distraction, research shows that the root cause lies elsewhere. During this session, I challenged attendees to be introspective when I explained that distraction actually comes from within. Many thanks for having me to speak on the topics I love most! #Indistractable #GeneralAssembly #ContinuingEducation …see more

What’s the four-letter word leaders swear by for career success? GRIT. This soft skill is the ability to maintain a long-term focus on a highly important goal, and having the stamina and passion to keep going, even when you get frustrated or feel challenged. Those with grit consider themselves lifelong learners, and welcome opportunities to better themselves. To develop your grit, ask yourself these seven questions: 1. How am I going to help others? 2. How am I going to increase my exposure to new ideas, experiences and possibilities? 3. What do I want? 4. What are my fears? 5. What is my intention, and to what must I devote more—and less—attention to maintain this? 6. What are the actions and behaviors in the past that have not served me well, and what will serve me well in the future? 7. What people and elements in my environment do I need to change, keep or remove? #grit #leadership #business #success #professionaldevelopment #growth #softskills #career #HumansFirst #growthmindset …see more

Here are seven* proven road trip-inspired rules to help you navigate your career and ensure that your professional journey is one to remember: 1. Begin your journey with a smile and a sense of wonder. When you start your journey—a new job or industry or founding your own business—with positivity, you bring an infectious energy and enthusiasm to all that you do. And coupled with curiosity—about your new role, industry, and the people with whom you'll interact—you'll have a winning combination to kick off your professional journey. 2. Make sure to keep your tank full. It's easy to get caught up in your projects and to-do lists and forget to top off the one thing that powers your professional growth: your brain. Rather than rest on your laurels, passively letting time (and skill sets and knowledge) pass you by, adopt a growth mindset where you view every opportunity as a chance to grow and learn. 3. Don't forget to make pit stops along the way. Achievements are great; glossing over them is not. You'll likely have a decades-long career, so don't forget to take breaks to celebrate your small wins along the way. By regularly practicing gratitude, you'll appreciate your progress and journey even more. *Part 1 of 3 #career #leadership #emotionalintelligence #softskills …see more

In the workplace, effectively communicating authentic appreciation and encouragement isn’t one-size-fits-all, nor is it restricted to a single language of appreciation. The best way to express your gratitude in the workplace starts with asking others their preferences so you can better relate to one another and deepen your relationships. There are five languages of workplace #appreciation : Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Appropriate Physical Touch. This week, let’s breakdown how to effectively communicate using them, actions you can take to support each style, and things to avoid. #1: WORDS OF AFFIRMATION 💬 How To Communicate As this language’s name suggests, use words to affirm, encourage, and appreciate people. Employ empathy to understand your colleagues better and actively listen to them to signal your interest. Actions To Take Provide verbal praise in front of others—in a team meeting or when you’re with customers, for instance. Regularly send unexpected messages, emails, or texts of encouragement to foster closer work relationships. Things To Avoid Offering non-constructive criticism or failing to recognize your workmates’ efforts, which will leave others feeling frustrated and unappreciated. #leadership #communication …see more

Science tells us that there is a way to make progress that doesn’t involve a tremendous amount of time or effort—and is more likely to stick. The trick? Think small. Or, more specifically, “micro.” “Microsteps”—a term coined by Arianna Huffington , Thrive Global founder & CEO—are small, incremental, science-backed actions we can take that will have both immediate and long-lasting benefits to the way we live our lives. This is confirmed by science and habit change experts, who advise people to start small and cultivate an environment where doing the right thing is as easy as possible. To create a new habit, simplify the behavior down to its tiniest essence. Doing this ensures that the habit will be easy to do, which means you’ll be more likely to continue it. This creates small wins, personal victories that are deeply satisfying and worth celebrating. Because people change best by feeling good, not by feeling bad, you’ll continue to seek out the reward of that new behavior and create a virtuous cycle of growth. And that’s worth going micro. #leadership #change #progress …see more

Want to know a secret LinkedIn hack that brought me 1 million views? I tagged Jeff Weiner . Then the amazing thing happened, he commented and repeated my key message "Be a channel. Be a voice". I'm pretty sure if you get a prolific profile with a million followers comment on your post, it will go viral :P This hack only works if they comment. haha. Still, LinkedIn is a place that open doors. For the last 3 years, ever since I've been active, LinkedIn has opened many doors of opportunities for me. It allowed me to be a voice here. I'm not famous. I'm one of 700ish million professionals here. But, I'm one of many passionate voices that care about sharing knowledge. This is an opportunity for you to be a channel. Pre-COVID, I travelled the world and build a global community of entrepreneurs. During-COVID, LinkedIn actually accelerated my business, The Trusted Voice , and I used this platform to bring in business. LinkedIn allowed me to weather the storm and survive 2020. I'm pretty excited to see what @ryan and the team will do. As a creator, we're in for an exciting future. Did you know that if you create content consistently (2+ times/week) you are automatically in the top 1% on LinkedIn?! It's no wonder why it is catching on! With much more content and views, I'm seeing a much lower engagement rate. Tell me, what prevents you from leaving a like or comment on a post? 🚩Is it because of the creator? 🚩Have you already seen the content elsewhere? 🚩Do you prefer your activity to remain private from you employer/network? 🚩Something else? Please share! Personally, I choose not to engage because of a lack of time, but also because the content may be political or religious in nature to which I administer the same rules here as I do at the pub... (i.e. no religion or politics) Thank you for participating in this poll! Chantel Soumis 🌟 #socialmedia #linkedin …see more

It is easy to say that age is just a number while we are constantly told we should have attainable, actionable, and time sensitive, SMART goals... These projections and plans certainly put the pressure on our personal timelines... However, it is also comforting knowing that WE control the narrative and can make a switch at any age or phase of our lives! I remember a class I had in high school to plan for my future. We had to choose... 📓 A college... 💡Core studies... 💼 A career path... 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Even if we wanted a home and a family! At 16, I couldn't plan for the events following a swim meet let alone a future in digital marketing and changed majors four times with multiple degrees for my indecisive buttocks 😂 Don't put so much pressure on yourself and your future or the future of your children! If you WANT to make a shift in your career... it's never too late! Just ask Catherine (Cat) Daar , founder of the Never Too Late Project and Zeta Yarwood who talks often about age and bias. Companies and hiring managers are challenged to find the “right talent” because they don’t have the “right processes and standards” for hiring. In order to succeed in finding the “right talent” the hiring managers need to have “the bar” and “the definition” of what skills they need versus “not clearly define those skills” and consequently “lowering the bar” in hiring. - Karla Monterroso #recruitingtips #genderequity #hiringminorities #believeinminorities #datadrivenhiringapporach #wisdom2.0 #newleadersummit …see more
