Over the past 5 months, we've more than doubled the size of our Applied Science and software teams, opened a new and much bigger office in Seattle, and shipped 5 consecutive and very successful software releases to our customers, while working on a new, innovative flagship release. And that's just in Software Engineering :). It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're empowered and encouraged to act without bureaucracy, red tape and ego-based handcuffs, and when you empower your organization to do the same. I absolutely love this place. #brightmachines #innovative #dayone #hiring …see more

Like everyone else, I'm constantly pinged by recruiters. I find it flattering but mostly don't respond. I do, however, always respond - with a healthy dose of humor - when an Amazon recruiter pings me on LinkedIn to present me with an exciting opportunity at Amazon :).

All distractions have an internal trigger — a feeling that underpins your desire to avoid the task at hand. Internal triggers are the uncomfortable emotional states that we seek to escape from. With heightened anxiety and fear, we have more of these internal triggers. The world has become more uncertain, we worry about our health, and many of us are worrying about jobs. To become indistractable, assess your internal triggers honestly. Are you reading headlines or checking Twitter to be informed or are you fleeing reality? Are you on Facebook to catch up with friends or are you trying to avoid a work deadline? Are you on TikTok for a planned break or are you putting off going to the gym? Problems start when we use technology to avoid dealing with uncomfortable emotions at the heart of our distraction. How have you handled internal triggers lately? And how do you plan to better yourself in the new year? #Indistractable #NewYear #Growth #Development …see more

Here's a quick productivity tip that'll help you utilize your time effectively: temptation bundling 💡 Temptation bundling is when we use a reward from one area of our life to encourage us to do something helpful in another area. An example I like to use is how I consume news. Whenever I see an article online, I keep in mind that the company that produced it has designed its website to keep me engaged -- to keep me scrolling, clicking, and checking back. This is why I've decided NOT to read the news online. Anytime I find something I'd like to read, I save it to an app called Pocket that will save the contents of the piece and read it out to me. Now, I only consume those articles when I workout or take a walk. This allows me to turn news consumption into a reward for doing something I promised myself I would do! And the best part of all? I can stay informed without having to worry about pop-ups, infinite scroll, or any other tricks that would prevent me from using my time effectively. I bundle the temptation of media consumption with exercise! #Indistractable #Media …see more

I spent five years working on Indistractable. In it, I talk about my journey with handling distraction, the four steps we can all follow to live our values, and how to raise indistractable kids. I looked into the science-backed methods for handling distraction that have allowed me to live a healthier and more productive life. This is why I’m extremely excited that the Kindle version of Indistractable has been temporarily marked down! 🎉 The sale is over at the end of today, so I’ve included a link in the comments section below 👇 Do you know anybody who would benefit from the Indistractable message? #Indistractable #Sale #Author …see more

Email is the mother of all habit-forming technology. Why? Because it’s full of variable rewards. When you get an email, you’re never quite sure what it’ll be about, who it will be from, or whether or not it’s urgent. All of this variability keeps us checking and rechecking. I recently had the opportunity to speak to Carey Nieuwhof about habit-forming products, product design, and the four steps to becoming indistractable. Distraction is contagious. When one person takes out their phone at dinner or at a party, it acts as an external trigger. Soon, others are lost in their screens, at the expense of the conversation. Psychologists call this phenomenon “social contagion.” The way others around us act influences how we act. Given the enormous impact others have on our actions, how can we manage distraction around those with whom we want to spend uninterrupted quality time? Essayist and investor Paul Graham coined a term for behaviors society discourages: social antibodies. The remedy for distraction in social situations involves the development of new norms that make it taboo to check one’s phone when in the company of others. The way to make sure certain behaviors are no longer acceptable is to call them out and address them with social antibodies. A way to discourage digital distraction is to give people two options: 1) excuse themselves to attend to the crisis happening on their device 2) kindly put their phone away The question goes like this: “I see you’re on your phone. Is everything okay?” More often than not, people will put their device away and return to the conversation. Thoughts? #Indistractable #Behavior #SocialScience …see more

The inventor of GDP said: 1. Don't use it for national well-being 2. Parents' work should be included 3. Defense spending should not We ignored all three points. GDP is not working as our success metric. If a truck drives itself, GDP will skyrocket but millions will be without income. This type of incentive system is why profit has driven us mad. How to be a trustworthy brand ... Here's a secret to being a 3x Top Voice on LinkedIn: I started to build my personal brand 10 years ago. Yeah, it's a long time. I gained major growth when I jumped on to video and developed channels. Fried Chicken became a visual 4-5 years ago. Building a personal brand is a long-term game. Or you can play the short game and fizzle out like a shooting star. Still, I believe in providing a pathway to success. What took me 10 years, can be shortened... The key is to build your foundations, where you align with your truth and values. And you need time, the headspace to develop your personal brand. The 7Vs is my framework for building a strong personal brand: 🍗 Your... Vision + Values + Volks + Voice + Validation + Victory Plus once you defined your volks (it's German for folks/people), you will create content that resonates with what you're saying. That's why I created The Trusted Circle, a creative space to build and grow your personal brand. We offer and give you access to: - a personal brand playbook - a network of mentors - and more Interested? Views = vanity metrics It's candy. The sugar rush hits you when you people hit the likes. It's really tempting to consider likes as a yardstick of metrics. Especially if you're starting out. It does give you temporary wins. But the big win will come when you have an audience that comes back for more and more. When it comes to personal branding. It's not about how many views you gain. It can be used as a metric of growth. Can you sustain views over a period of time? But, it's pretty unrealistic to go for one viral hit. Go and build a brand. It has more legs. A brand allows you to build: - an audience - products/services - a business - gain visibility Don't be a one-hit-wonder. Build a trustworthy brand. Be a voice of substance. Not a voice of candy. #stringtheory on #personalbranding …see more
