My flight experience with Condor Airlines: I arrived at Condor Airlines counter in SeaTac International Airport (booked trip through Expedia) at 4:10 PM or so for a 5:15 PM flight. They "closed early" with single employee who could do nothing and a supervisor who simply, and incredulously, refused to return to help us. (I finally got him on the phone after begging the lady that was here to call him, to just have him tell everyone he wouldn't be coming back). I called Condor Reservations, who also told me there was nothing they could do to help. Two folks trickled in after me - they're faring even worse. Unreal. I have missed flights before, for all sorts of reasons reasons. I have NEVER, however, been in a situation where an agent was not behind the desk to help me book another flight, or had a number that I could call where someone could do something. For a fee or for free. What makes this incident so egregious, and just sickening, is that I was within bounds of my travel time, and NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE, at Condor, was here to do anything to check me in or help me. All they cared about was going home early and closing shop while leaving their customers stranded. I would appreciate you spreading this message for awareness via social media, and thank you. #CondorAirlines …see more

Workplace distraction isn’t the result of technological innovation. Slack or email aren’t the reason we aren’t productive. No, the root of workplace distraction is cultural dysfunction. Too many organizations have a blatant disregard for their employees’ time, attention, and focus. Getting emails isn’t a problem, but getting nonstop emails all day, everyday isn’t healthy. For people to do their best work, they need to focus on one task at a time. The problem is never the technology used at work. The problem is company culture. ….which is actually a good thing -- because company culture can be fixed. I recently appeared on the Behind The Scenes Podcast by Kalaari Capital where I spoke to Vani Kola about how to build indistractble teams, the difference between reactive and reflective work, and how to capture the monopoly of the mind. I’ve included a link to the episode below! I’d like to know what you think: Do you have an indistractble workplace? Why or why not? #Podcast #Workplace #Culture …see more

What is temptation bundling and how can we use it to stay productive? 🤔 Temptation bundling is when we use a reward from one area of our life to encourage us to do something helpful in another area. For example, I know that whenever I see an article online, the media company that produced it has designed its website to keep me scrolling, clicking, and checking back constantly. So, I don’t read the news on the webpage. Here’s what I do instead ⬇️ I save it to an app called Pocket that will scrub the contents of the article and read it out to me through my headphones. Now, I only consume those articles when I workout or take a walk. This way, I’m able to take something that might have been a distraction at my desk and turn it into a reward for doing something I promised myself I would do. Have you tried temptation bundling? If so, how? #Indistractable #Productivity #Behavior #Design …see more

“If you don’t plan your day, someone else will” Only by setting aside specific times in our schedules for traction -- the actions that draw us toward what we want in life -- can we turn our backs on distraction. In order to live our values each day, we must reserve time in our schedules to do so. Without planning ahead, it’s impossible to tell the difference between healthy traction and unhealthy distraction. I explain more in the clip below! #Indistractable #Values #Behavior #Psychology …see more

Have smartphones made our kids more distracted than ever before? Not exactly. To understand why, it’s helpful to take a look back. Throughout history, we’ve always felt as if advances in tech are controlling our children. When I was growing up, it was video games. Before that, it was television. Before that, it was radio. New developments in technology have always brought a sense of panic. New technology and new methods of entertainment are only proximate causes of distraction and prevent us from addressing the real issue. Our kids are overusing technology as an escape, but we need to ask ourselves, what are they escaping from? While it’s easy to point the finger at tech, it doesn’t address the underlying issues. #Indistractable #Tech #Distraction …see more

Notifications are the big problem in the cycle of distraction. I had a chance to discuss this and other tips and insights from my new book, Indistractable, with Melina Palmer for Inc. Magazine .' We spoke about how distraction is fueled by opportunity, how we should question the intention behind our distraction, and how we should remind ourselves of what we are missing. Check out the article, “3 Ways You Can Limit Everyday Distractions,” at the link in the comments below and be sure to share how you combat distraction! 👇👇👇 #Indistractable #HumanBehavior #Distraction #Tech #Intent …see more

Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense and insight. But it transforms into something truly powerful when it is shared. Why? Because all the wisdom in the world is meaningless without application. When you freely share your wisdom, you provide value to others. Your observations enrich their lives. You help them think about their situations in an entirely new light and encourage possibilities to emerge. And when you do this on a regular basis, those most important to you will look to you as a guidepost, a trusted thought leader who strives to serve others by communicating the lessons they’ve learned in an engaging and compelling way. #wisdom #value #serve #entrepreneurs #communication #socialmedia #leadership …see more

One of my favorite conferences every year is Content Marketing Conference in Boston. Because of Covid, the conference has gone 100% virtual, but with all the same great stuff. Even better, the amazing organizer Byron White made all the workshops and keynotes free! (Mine on #LinkedInAds included). So definitely take advantage. There will be amazing learnings to be had! https://lnkd.in/gZW_rB4 …see more

To Pug About LinkedIn... I found this photo on Facebook, it occasionally pops up wonderful memories. 🍗 String's Backstory: The year was 2017 and I was presenting a keynote about LinkedIn Video at VidCon Australia. It was the first time VidCon, the biggest YouTube conference to visit down under. Prior to October 2017, I never used LinkedIn. As noted on the photo, it's been 3 weeks in and these are some of my results. Back then, I thought LinkedIn was slightly stuffy and resume holder. LinkedIn has changed for the better. It allowed videos! It allowed content to flow! It's more than a static resume, it's a dynamic one. Meaning that you create valued-based or cred-based content that showcases your professional expertise. Fast forward to 2020, and here are 4 C's to leverage LinkedIn: 🍗 Channel: Be a trusted source. 🍗 Content: Create meaningful content that provides value 🍗 Cred: Use content to reinforce your credibility 🍗 Community: Don't build a passive audience, cultivate a community that cares. Use LinkedIn to be a channel, to be a voice. Build your personal brand. How has LinkedIn changed your life or business? #stringtheory on #personalbranding …see more

Much has been written already about Sergio Garcia's win at the Masters Tournament. There are many ways to spin his win. Here's mine: after 70+ tries, he succeeded. That means he lost 70+ times in major tournaments. How many people would have given up and just assumed a win was not in the cards. Sergio's response: eventually it will happen if I just keep doing my thing. Bravo. Lesson for us all there. For real, whatever one's profession. …see more

HR isn’t like all the other functions in a company. It’s so different from all the business-focus positions - product, marketing, sales, R&D. It has its own unique qualities. You can’t compare to anything else. Really? Actually - NO. It’s not. My role, for example, as an sourcer is very similar to an SDR:  Linkedin is one of our main tools  Reaching out to prospects is daily routine  We do cold calls  We try to create the perfect pitch  We use templates, but personalisation is the key  Small wins are big wins for us, one prospect at a time.  We’re Competitive We even share the same memes! Some of the best tips I got along the way, I got from Justin Michael . He understands SDR like no other. What HR people do is unique, but the job isn’t all that different from others. This opens the door to learning from so many more people. #HR #SDR #People …see more
