Andrew Luck, star quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, shocked the world Saturday night when he announced his retirement from football--at the age of 29. Why would Luck, one of the best quarterbacks on one of the best teams in the NFL, a man who easily could have earned hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade, retire at an age most would consider his physical prime? In a brief press conference, Luck gave us a glimpse into his thought process. He helped us to understand how a man who makes millions of dollars to play the game that he loves can easily walk away. Our inaugural 3-month long SPARC Nonprofit Social Impact & STEM Bootcamp recently concluded and I couldn’t be prouder of our SPARC Scholars. The three finalists tackled social issues that are pressing to their local community. Our scholars came out of the program equipped with a growth mindset along with a richer network of mentors, an arsenal of newly developed soft skills that are critical for tomorrow’s workforce, and a deeper understanding of STEM and Social Impact. At a glance (follow @SPARC for individual stories next week!): 🎨 Raised $1.5k worth of school supplies for 100+ students and teachers from a low-income elementary school in San Jose. ✏️Countless hours dedicated to SAT tutoring with low-income high school students who can’t pay for prep classes. 🍎Social mentorship for students who lacked family support and guidance at home during a tumultuous time of transition. If you talk to recruiters or HR reps these days, you're sure to hear a lot about the "war for talent." What often gets less attention is what that means for workers. Last week, I visited the headquarters of Dell Technologies in Texas, where I met Kate Cosway, a woman with a master's degree in chemical engineering who had been unable to get a job because of her autism -- until this year, when she was hired through a new program for people on the autism spectrum. I met a software engineer who had taken two years off when she had children, then struggled to get back to work -- until Dell hired her through a new "Career Restart" program. And I stopped by Austin Community College , where employers were practically fighting over themselves to hire students -- and were willing to overlook barriers like inexperience or criminal records that might have been an issue in past years. There's been lots of talk recently (from me, among others) about whether the U.S. economy is headed for a recession. But it's worth remembering why it's so important to keep the expansion going as long as possible: The strong job market is creating opportunities for people who were left behind early in the recovery.
