For #ThrowbackThursday, remembering my visit to the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture in Accra, #Ghana, back in April of 2003. The first picture below is of me standing near DuBois' tomb, after an awe-filled tour of the Centre. It would take far too long to explain the impact that trip had on me. It's why I spent nine years living in Uganda and Kenya. And it's why I'm so thrilled that Reggie Singleton , and the young African American boys and young men he mentors with "The Males Place Manhood Training Program" in the @City of Charlotte  have just returned from what looks like an incredible adventure in Ghana! Starting my new week by reading this fascinating feature in The Washington Post about the African nation of #Benin and its role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. As this story illustrates, the layers of complexity within the slave trade are mind-boggling. Ahead of the 400th anniversary of the first documented arrival of Africans in America--to be commemorated in August of 2019--I plan to deepen my commitment to understanding my link to the African continent. I've traveled to Goree Island, off the coast of #Senegal, and I stood in the "Door of No Return." I've visited the Elmina Castle on #Ghana's Gold Coast, and I stood in the courtyard where my foremothers were chained to rocks while the slave ship captains decided which ones would be raped. I can attest that as an African-American, you cannot un-see those images; they fundamentally change how you view your history. I was not aware that Benin is collaborating with the Smithsonian Institution to build two museums focusing on the slave trade, but I'm determined to visit them when they are completed. You may recall me mentioning that I would be hitching a ride from the Little Rock Airport to Hot Springs and the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) 2017 Conference and Mentoring Project with Betsy Wade . Betsy was the first woman copy editor hired at The New York Times in 1956 and one of the named plaintiffs in the landmark 1974 Boylan v. New York Times gender discrimination lawsuit. I met her at the first JAWS camp I attended, at the Sojourner Inn in Teton Village, Wyoming. Sojourner Truth is a historical role model of mine, so I took that as a good sign. I had never been to Wyoming before. I had also never been around so many dynamic, empowered women before. Meeting women like Betsy turbo-charged my career. It's been utterly delightful re-connecting with her. Betsy is a she-ro, a legend, a dynamo, and a hoot. Do typos make me look unprofessional? The funny thing is I love reading. My mum couldn't afford child care and would chuck 5 of us kids into the library. It was my Google. I grew up in non-English household, my mum was originally from Vietnam. I remember an old boss, he gave me a 2-hour lecture on looking professional when I emailed our clients with typos. Then I became a professional content creator. Brands would pay for my stories and insights. I grew channels. I make a living off on content. You don't lose business over a typo. That's small-minded. I have written typos on proposals, but the direction was strong. I closed deals on a typo or two. I still do typos. On my emails, on my posts on LinkedIn. I prioritise on the importance of the message, on the big picture. The typos actually is a secret power I use to make mself more relatable. They help me find free editors and proofreaders. It gives people permission to connect with me. Grammarly helped. But it doesn't convey my personality or quirks. Don't let someone hold you back. It's them wanting you to succeed. I think haha.
