Thanks to the US Consulate General in Japan, I played sensai (teacher) today at Osaka Jogakuin University today to a packed classroom of 80+ female university students! OJ is an all-female junior & senior high school + university + graduates school, established since 1884. It was rebuilt after being completely destroyed during World War II, and is now developing women talents fluent in English and business. Because SoGal was founded as a student organisation during my grad school days, I always enjoy going to campuses and interacting with next gen women. What I told the students today was: 1) women’s no.1 mistake is to underestimate ourselves. 2) Find your inner voice and let it be heard, whether it’s in politics, business or your family. 3) gender investing gap needs to be filled by young women who are savvy enough to save and invest, because consumerism and capitalism only make the rich even richer. How many of us have tried a digital detox before? ✋ I know I have! I started using an old-school cell phone so I couldn’t be tempted to use email, Instagram, and Twitter. To avoid wasting time reading too many news articles online, I purchased a subscription to the print edition of a newspaper. In an attempt to stay focused while writing, I bought a 1990s word processor without an internet connection. ❌ None of these things worked ❌ I found it too difficult to get around without the GPS and I missed all the other handy things my smartphone could do. The print newspaper subscription was a great idea, but soon I had a stack of unread papers piled up next to me as I watched the news on TV. When I’d sit down to write with my old word processor, I’d find myself glancing at the bookshelf and soon start flipping through books unrelated to my work. Somehow, I kept getting distracted. What was the root cause of this distraction? Forethought is the antidote to impulsiveness. In order to avoid distraction and spend our time in ways that align with our values, we have to plan ahead. And one way to plan ahead is to make a precommitment. When we precommit, we make choices in advance and pledge to stick to them. Precommitments are powerful because they ensure that we don't rely so much on the whims of self-control or willpower in the moment. Here's an example: once you buy a plane ticket for a friend’s wedding, it’s rare that you back out 👰 Another example: once you put money away in a retirement account that has a penalty for early withdrawal, you’re less likely to take that money out 💰 Precommitments can help us defeat distraction and live out our values. For example: The internet router in my home shuts of the wifi to certain devices at 10pm on weeknights. My family and I could find a way to get back online if we really tried, but that would take more effort and so reminds us that we’ve made a precommitment to shut down and power off. I prefer multiple so I decide when I want to deal with what topic - personal, work (of which I have multiple too), newsletters, tax/accounts. Same with twitter handles so I can control the type of newsfeed at different times.
