In a recent post, I wrote about a (possibly) homeless man on public transportation and a lot of LinkedIn comments included asking me if I did anything to help him? Really they wanted to know if I solved the problem. (Answer: yes and no). But it’s the right question to ask. “Did I help?” It’s the right question to ask of ourselves (instead of asking this of others) when we see people distraught or confused or lost or suffering. Digital health has shaped my life. It helps me exercise 30 minutes on average every single day. It makes me keep working on my performance. It helps get a better picture of my overall fitness and daily physical activities. It helps check my resting heart rate. It has helped me improve my sleep and wake up at the best time every morning. It has helped me lost weight and then keep it. It has helped me design a preventive plan with my physicians. This is the summary of what I have learnt while using around +100 digital health technologies over the last decade. On my A.I. journey, I just had a workshop with a developer who works with deep and machine learning algorithms. I had a hundred questions and he helped me understand the details of not just these methods but also their implications for medicine and healthcare. What stroke me the most was what I learnt about reinforcement learning. AlphaGo that beat the world's best GO player (Lee Sedol, on the photo) also used that. It means you describe rules and then let the algorithm get outputs. Then you retrospectively tell the algorithm which output was fine and it creates its own rules for reaching those outputs. Do you know what it means? It means it's not bound the cognitive limitation of people. Physicians have been accusing me that I want to take away their "art of practicing medicine". I now go further than that. The era of medicine being an art will just begin when reinforcement learning tackles medical tasks. Can you imagine what new ways we will learn about finding cures, treatments and managing conditions? Ways we have never thought of. Just like how AlphaGo made moves nobody made before for thousands of years.
