On this #InternationalDayOfTheGirl2020 , I dream of the day when it is safe to travel again, so I can meet more little girls like the ones I encountered during my years in East Africa. They reminded of myself when I was young...quiet, constrained by the boundaries of poverty, her parents’ religion and dismissed by the larger society. I knew them so well, and I guess I wanted them to see that it was possible to travel far and wide, to have a career...to dream big. So to all the little girls in the world who start life with no material things, just like I did, I’m here to tell you that there are riches beyond measure locked in your mind. And when you are able to believe that you have the key, the adventure begins. #gender #women #girls #womenandgirls #DayOfTheGirl #genderequality …see more

I was 6 years old in 1967, when riots and protests spread throughout America and words like "justice" and "equality" and "civil rights" were part of the national dialogue. I was too young to truly comprehend and absorb the tension, anxiety and trauma that filled the air, but I grew up dealing with the consequences. Fifty years later--and following nearly a decade away from America--I came back just in time to have my heart broken again and again and again. I grew up in a town that was literally disfigured by racial hatred (Cairo, Illinois), and it took me years to recover from the vitriol and acrimony. Now it feels like I'm re-living it all over again, watching my whole country slide down that twisted, masochistic path. I'm fighting like hell to hold on to hope. #America #Charlottesville …see more

Tea or Coffee? I love coffee but recently I visited an area in China known for Pu’er Tea. In China, Pu’er tea, made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, is created according to a specialized process and many believe in it’s unique health benefits, such as improvements in heart health and reductions in cholesterol levels. It’s also said that Pu’er tea can help promote weight loss, enhance eyesight, stimulate circulation, and soothe hangovers! Coffee however has been shown to lower the risk of some cancers, including endometrial cancer and nonmelanoma skin cancer. A study of more than 500,000 people across the world concluded that coffee drinking was associated with reduced risk of death from various causes Tea however gets the leg up for one reason only: the plethora of powerful antioxidants and polyphenols. Yes, coffee has them, too, but tea often has them in higher concentrations. I’m still a devoted coffee drinker but have added Pu’er tea to my weekly hot beverage line-up! …see more

A few years back I heard of a similar story at a shelter near me. This dog was a 10 year old giant schnauzer and the shelter was having a hard time adopting her out...(Her previous "family" dumped her too...at least at a safe and caring shelter!!) We adopted her. Her name is Charlie and she has been a total delight. As a huge animal rights person, II think the "no-kill" shelters do a great job and would rather see an unwanted dog or cat go there than abandoned in the street.... BUT all shelters should be "safe harbors" for animals and be completely no-kill... We really need to progress out views about how we treat companion animals... …see more
During these turbulent times, I needed a new challenge and I thought September is the perfect time to start one. I decided to remove an element of my life that I like but is not healthy. As I have a deep love for Spanish red wines (from Ribera del Duero), I will go through September without drinking any alcohol. Since I've started talking about this to some people I know and work with, now 8 people decided to do something similar with me. Some of them will abandon alcohol, others will stop smoking or drinking energy drinks for a month. It has become a community project. If you have something in your life that you like to do, but you know it's not really healthy, come with me and throughout September, you can count on me for support and emotional encouragement. It's easier to do it together. So, who is coming with me on this journey? :) #HealthSeptember #HealthyLifestyle #AlcoholIQ #Health #Challenge …see more
