Is technology the enemy of genius? Technology promises to make us happier and smarter. It brings us pleasure, friendship, sex, and knowledge, all at our fingertips. It also allows us to remember, and know, less. It has led to a world where algorithms and smartphones have become our cognitive servants: we can burden them, while liberating ourselves. But as we've become skimmers, scanners and scrollers, is technology reshaping our brains and destroying our capacity for deep thinking? In my latest IPIT podcast with Adriana Stan, philosopher Jim Holt, author of When Einstein Walked with Gödel: Excursions to the Edge of Thought, discusses the impact of smartphones and computers on our minds and creativity. Drawing from numerous thinkers, Jim outlines the concepts of fluid vs. crystallized intelligence and brain plasticity, and debunks the myth of genius as it relates to IQ. Voice as the new User Interface seems to be the big news from CES. I'd rather no interface, just smart contextual suggestions, automation and the occasional nudge to say yes to or swipe on.

What a fabulous way to start my Tuesday—reading my dear friend Jamila Robinson ’s joyous Instagram post about her essay featured in this month’s FOOD AND WINE Magazine! I'm so proud to say that I’ve followed Jamila’s journey from college intern at The Detroit Free Press to today, where she’s an editorial director for Atlantic 57 with a passion for all things culinary and refined. But the most remarkable thing about Jamila is her equal devotion to nurturing journalistic talent for people of color who want to write about #food , #dining and the #culinaryarts . Through her work with The James Beard Foundation , Jamila has supported dozens of young journalists who might otherwise have not had the opportunity to pursue those fields. Three cheers for Jamila—she already has my vote for “Woman of the Year”! #womeninmedia #journalism #mentoring #journalistsofcolor #journalists #foodlovers #foodblogger #foodlove #foodforthought …see more
I've landed safely in the Democratic Republic of the #Congo at an incredibly pivotal moment. Just when it seemed that significant progress was being made in the identification of potential #Ebola cases, when treatment advances meant that more people were surviving and when a new experimental #vaccine was yielding some hopeful results, attacks on treatment centers in Butembo and Katwa have created major disruption and increased fear and mistrust. It was wonderful hearing the velvet voice of Ray Suarez again at the "Telling Vital Stories" workshop. The former NPR "Talk of the Nation" host and Public Broadcasting Service "PBS Newshour" anchor is now a Visiting Professor at Amherst College , but his insights from decades of covering American life and urban policies provided journalists with lots of challenges to dig deeper and think harder about issues like poverty, affordable housing, socio-economic justice, unemployment, etc. Ford Foundation John S. and James L. Global travel may be stalled, but consumers are shopping the world online. But when foreign exchange rates fluctuate from the time a purchase is made until the time it settles and is reflected on the consumers statement, that buyer experience can quickly go south. Visa ’s new policy to steady those rates, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Visa Direct Bill Sheley tells me, will mean greater clarity for consumers and a much-needed competitive edge for issuers and merchants. Here are the details. …see more

Nice neat job at first glance on a Brand New building but every door I went through had Fire door keep shut and the mag lock reduced the head height of the door breaking building regs, Approved document B states "Headroom in escape routes - 5.16 Escape routes should have a minimum clear headroom of 2m. The only projections allowed below this height are door frames" Mag locks reducing further is not allowed. every single one one was drilled through the door negating the fire door certificate and the solution overall isn’t compliant with escape door standards EN179/EN1125 nor are the mags likely to be certified to BSEN1634 for use on fire doors. For advice on Elecrical Locking systems to escape and/or fire doors contact Abloy UK or myself on 07880 456738 Neil.hughes@abloy.co.uk #accesscontrol #securitysolutions #securitymanagement #accessmanagement #safetyandsecurity #facilitiesmanagement #firesafety #firedoors #fireprotection#abloy …see more
