Armed with all your forward-looking and optimistic pieces of advice, I gave the lecture about artificial intelligence to medical students yesterday. As this is the topic closest to my heart, and as I believe how all of us can cooperate successfully with A.I. mostly depends on the future generation, I have put my mind and my soul into the presentation. I described 5 things they need to know about A.I. as future physicians: its definition, it levels, major methods such as machine and deep learning, its challenges and its promises. I got a great response and students were engaged but around a third of them didn't give a damn (though it was a facultative program for them). I honestly worry about them and I tried all my tricks to involve them in some ways without success. How shall we address those who don't think A.I. is not going to be a part of their professional careers or don't have any opinion about it at all? #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #speaker #speakerlife #artificialintelligence #ai #medicalstudents …see more

During my talk in Lisbon to diabetes patients, I described the concept of the empowered patient and what patient design means. I emphasized how patients like them should influence physicians and policy makers. After my talk, a diabetes blogger asked me a question about what I say to my peer physicians when I talk about this concept. I told her that I say the same but I also describe the concept of the empowered physician which we presented in a JMIR paper. "We argue that patient empowerment, the spread of digital health, the biopsychosocial-digital approach, and the disappearance of the ivory tower of medicine lead to a new role for physicians. Digital health allows the job of being a medical professional to become more rewarding and creative." Do you know real e-physicians? A peak flow meter is a handheld device that measures how well air moves out of your lungs. It can measure how narrow your airways are hours, even days, before you have any asthma symptoms. By taking your asthma medicine when your peak flow meter indicates changes – before you notice symptoms – you may be able to avoid a serious asthma episode. Simple technology that can have a huge impact on someone's life. The Smart Peakflow device promises the same. I blow into it as hard as I can and it gives me the results on the app. It's that simple. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #wearable #health #healthy #fromchancetochoice …see more
See how many sleep trackers I have tested over the years. The only feature I'd need? The freaking smart sleep alarm, the Holy Grail of fitness tracking. Between the two states of waking up and needing 3 cups of coffee to start the day and being able to start the day with energy, there might only be two minutes (light vs deep sleep). A smart alarm helps you wake up only from light sleep to feel better for the whole day. Jackpot! Give me a reason why you would not want this in your life! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #wearable #health #healthy #fromchancetochoice …see more

I've been meditating with Muse for a few days and it's surprisingly addictive to be able to choose between scenes and the way I can collect points is also rewarding. I'm pretty sure I couldn't reach mindfulness with it, but I'm also sure I would not be able to start that journey without its help. See the full review here! http://bit.ly/2yxlRXV …see more

There is a book written by a historian that focuses on technological progress, the views of famous futurists on that and science fiction. Yes, it does sound like the perfect book written exactly for my taste. It's incredibly detailed and it was amazing to learn about how people in the past looked at the future, what awful and accurate predictions they made and why it makes no sense to keep on making blind predictions today. Instead, we should offer scenarios people can choose from and understand that it depends on them where we go from here. Yesterday was service selection at the United States Naval Academy. It's an important milestone when midshipman in their final year find out where they will serve as officers after they are commissioned. It's pretty similar to match day for medical students. Some select and get chosen to be in the fleet on Naval Ships, others Naval aviators, submarines, medical corp or cyber security to name a few options. These three amazing young women will be Marines. My daughter (far right) will become a Marine aviator. It was only in 1995, three years before she was born that women were accepted into the Marine aviation program. Women still make up only 7.5% of Marine officers. Oorah! ladies and thank you for showing those coming up behind you how it is done. #leadershipexcellence …see more

I have no issue whatsoever with Sunday Night Football adopting a mocking tone in describing what happened to my beloved Jets. We deserve it.
