If you're trying to persuade or influence, and someone states something that's obviously false, you should definitely correct them immediately, right? Wrong. People are emotionally attached to their beliefs. If you mercilessly expose every flaw in a person's reasoning, they’ll feel attacked. The amygdala will take over, and their focus will no longer be on listening or reasonable discussion; rather, they will defend themselves or attack in return. Instead, focus on learning more about the other person’s viewpoint, as well as the reasons behind their feelings. Then, work to re-establish common ground, with the goal of laying a foundation you can build upon. Above all, strive to leave the conversation on a positive note. Remember that lasting influence takes time. Your goal isn’t to “win the argument” or change someone’s mind in a single discussion. Rather, strive to see the bigger picture. I went pretty punchy with this piece for the National. These may be totally unprecedented times, but that doesn't mean they were totally unpredictable. Common wisdom dictates that large companies need to act small, we need to disrupt or die and that radical business transformation is essential to not only survival, but untold riches. It is no surprise then, that about $2 trillion has been spent globally on digital transformation and the pursuit of innovation. This would be great news except we see virtually no evidence of any real transformation in our daily lives anywhere. Indeed, change has followed perfectly clear linear trend lines going back 20 years. I'm not one to think that the future is all about Digitally Native or DTC brands, but it's amazing how many great product owners seem to have no interest in selling. Many do so not to upset retailers, many have poor unit economics, but many seem to just assume it's harder than it is. Wonder if you could set up a business that basically buys the rights to do this- uses dropshipping, does marketing, promotions, advertising and takes a fee or rev share. …see more
