Wendy's officially re-entered the breakfast wars on Monday when it launched a new breakfast menu across the U.S. Part of its ad campaign focused on attacking McDonald's, the current fast food breakfast king. How did McDonald's respond? McD's could have gotten caught up in a war of words with Wendy's. Instead, the company declared Monday, March 2 (the day of Wendy's new breakfast launch), "National Egg McMuffin Day." Additionally, McDonald's invited customers to enjoy a "free, freshly prepared Egg McMuffin at participating McDonald's nationwide," by simply downloading the McDonald's mobile app and making an order. With this strategy, McDonald's simultaneously: -focuses attention on its business, rather than a competitor; -detracts from Wendy's big launch by taking away potential customers; and, -builds loyalty while gathering consumer insights through its mobile app. Interestingly, Wendy's seems to have recognized the genius in McDonald's' strategy. My family just got back from a wonderful vacation: 10 days of good food, great sun, and beautiful beaches. One day had the potential to ruin our trip, though. I thought we might head to the same beach we went to just a few days earlier. Soft white sand, clear water, and a great bar w/ umbrella and chairs. But my wife wanted to try a different beach, so I went along with the plan. We arrived, and my wife was in heaven. She loved the turquoise water & amazing view. She even found a little spot under a tree to give us shade. I wasn't as enthusiastic. The shade from the tree was great, but there were no chairs--and it was far from comfortable. The sand wasn't nearly as soft as I like. And the surf was much rougher, which certainly didn't please my 4-year old. As I kept comparing this beach to the other one, my mood deteriorated. And then I remembered three little words that have saved my relationship time and time again: Disagree and commit. It was great catching up with old friends from our Shanghai office at a celebration last night of 25 years of an on the ground presence in this dynamic and cosmopolitan city. It's stunning that the entire digital world is still predicated on the lazy assumption that screens should default to being static. High res gifs, retail imagery that moves, logos that shimmer, so much can be done. (aware too much and it can be distracting)

No surprise here - thought leadership is worth doing. 63% feel it gives a sense of the type and caliber of thinking an organization is likely to deliver. For a #FlashbackFriday during #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2019 , I'm thinking back to the June 2018 graduation ceremony for #midwives at the #EdnaAdanUniversity in #Hargeisa , #Somaliland . That's when I met some of the most enthusiastic, energetic and inspiring women I will EVER meet. Many had overcome incredible odds to have the privilege of being mentored by Edna Adan Ismail . One of the young midwives I met, Kaltoun Yasin, sent me a Facebook instant message today to let me know that she is participating in Harvard University 's summer #globalhealth program, and that she led a presentation on #maternalmortality and #morbidity yesterday. Kaltoun took great pride in telling the audience that Madame Edna has surpassed her original goal of training 1,000 midwives in Somaliland, and that maternal deaths have dropped significantly since the training program began. At a time when I almost dread engaging with #socialmedia each day, I was so grateful that Kaltoun reached out to share her fantastic news. I’ve passed through #Detroit Metro Airport 2 or 3 dozen times since September of 1994, when I moved from Motown to Washington, D.C. I even spent 7 hours in the Immigration line here after the flight with the Underwear Bomber landed from Amsterdam just ahead of my flight on Christmas Day 2009. But I haven’t spent any time in The D since I left. And now I’m headed to the RenCen and #NABJ2018 , and it’s definitely a “Full Circle Moment.” Detroit was where I found my depth as a reporter and claimed my voice as a writer.
