Last month, Pitchbook reported that 2020 Q3 fundraising for female founders hit a 3-year low. I wanted to better understand the factors that made this grim reality, and I was able to pull information from McKinsey & Company , FLIK - Female Laboratory of Innovative Knowledge , Global Women in VC , and 500's own reports to find the answer. After launching our female founder hub earlier this year, the team at 500 and I plan to bring even more resources to female founders in 2021 with events, community partners, and more. Check out the factors affecting female founder funding and how we as a community can make 2021 look different: …see more

Healthcare Workers’ Parallel Pandemic: Chronic Stress It’s no surprise that doctors and nurses who go to work in an active battle zone, will, at some point, start to feel anxious, worried, and stressed. This battle combatant is a wildly contagious disease called COVID-19. Doctors, nurses, aides, medical techs, clerks, environmental service workers feel threatened for their lives by just doing their jobs. And it is not clear if Americans really appreciate the level of risk, exposure and selflessness that all medical workers do for all of us. When I worked in a busy inner-city ER, I felt rushed, stressed and at times, worried for my safety: every now and then, some patient would come after a nurse or doctor with a knife or gun. But in comparison to treating patients with COVID? No comparison—treating patients with a highly contagious disease and with patients that are really ill, is way, way harder. My heart goes out to all healthcare workers. The way we can support healthcare workers is by masking-up and keeping our distance. Selected Except: “We put on our masks and come to work every day because we don’t have the luxury of working from home in our pajamas, but the apathy and ennui that’s taken hold of society just makes our job feel thankless. It’s so demoralizing.” …see more
Total Rip-Off Of All Americans Boring but important is the possible striking down of Obamacare, which will mean we can expect to be ripped-off for all our health and wellbeing needs... Why? If it goes away, open your wallets because we each will experience increasing deductibles, being charged more if we are over 35, and having insurance companies drop expensive categories of benefits, like prescription drugs. But wait, there’s more: many generic medications would go away. And for all you Innovation Geeks, say good bye to innovation projects funded through Obamacare—it made sense for the government to fund programs that tried to find innovative ways that helped patients and lower costs, but this is exactly opposite for for-profit Health care that needs patients to pay top dollars for services. Oh and say good bye to restaurant calorie labeling, having medical device companies disclose gifts they make, and requiring work time and privacy for moms who need to breastfeed their babies. In Case You Missed It: Life Saving Medicine Now (Sorta) Affordable Good News: Insulin is now only going to cost people in Colorado $100.00/month, regardless of what the insurance companies or pharmaceutical companies or middlemen want to charge patients. (According to many sources, the cost of insulin has tripled in the last three years costing patients $6,000.00 per year!) Bad News: This is still really expensive for a lot of people —that’s $1,200.00 per year! Especially since over 100 million Americans have diabetes! Good News: Even though you have to be a resident of Colorado to benefit from this cap, it’s a strong start and a model for all other states. Let’s hear it for common sense and great legislation. …see more
Question: what's the one indicator you'd look for which forecasts significant disruption to traditional healthcare delivery ? Answer : decreasing admissions to hospitals . Hospitals have realized decreased volume and are losing patients to alternative settings for treatment. With the rise in better home-based care and enabled technology and devises, the healthcare industry will continue to provide what has been traditional hospital-based services in alternative care settings . My opinion? Every one will be happier for it..except those who make their money from hospitals . Selected Excerpt : “Studies have shown that patients with heart failure, pneumonia and some serious infections can be given intravenous antibiotics and other hospital-level treatments at home by visiting nurses. These “hospital at home” programs usually lead to more rapid recoveries, at a lower cost.” …see more

My favorite part of being a speaker is when I receive questions after a talk. Sometimes I get such amazing ones that I have to write them down. Here are the 5 best questions I have received this year. 1) Is HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey is an artificial narrow or general intelligence? 2) What made me have my genome sequenced? 3) What kind of primary care physician do I have who helps me get something out of the huge amounts of data I measure about my health? 4) What is the most science fiction-like idea in digital health? 5) If someone wanted to adopt digital health in their organization or company, what should be the first thing they do? As I don't travel for 3 weeks, if you have any questions about digital health, A.I. or the future of healthcare, just drop a comment and I'll reply to everyone. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #speaker #keynote #speakerlife #artificialintelligence …see more

We are proud to share the paper we wrote at The Medical Futurist Institute just got accepted by the Journal of Medical Internet Research. In it, we introduced the idea of the empowered physician. Similarly to how patients got empowered by technologies in the 21st century, we argue that it's time to let medical professionals get empowered too. If your physician is not empowered yet, you can help them become empowered.
