Working from National Geographic ’s headquarters this afternoon. Finishing up an edit on my #maternalmortality story slated for next January. Walked into a room where pages for all the stories scheduled for future publication are posted on the walls. One of them was mine. And Lynsey Addario’s. If this wasn’t happening to me, I wouldn’t believe it. #awed #grateful #blessed …see more

This is only the second time in my life that I have ever checked into a hospital, and it just happens to be in #Somaliland! The Edna Adan Ismail Hospital in #Hargeisa will be my home base for the next 6 days, and I have already had the experience of a lifetime by meeting Madame Edna Herself. She is the ultimate #globalhealth champion and #maternalhealth Superhero. #Uber ’s CEO said last month that it wants to be the operating system for everyday life. Take a number, since it’s a space that’s getting pretty active. There’s one big reason why so many now have such a big appetite to be the consumer’s #SuperApp , but a much shorter list of possible contenders. Here’s the big fork in the road that each Super App contender faces — and why, if successful, Super #Apps could claim extraordinary superpowers. Full Article: https://bit.ly/2BSBc6g …see more

The United States is going through a loneliness epidemic. Seriously. • Over 35 million Americans live alone -- a share of the population that’s been steadily rising over the past few decades. • One study from Cigna found that Gen Z was the loneliest generation and that 2 in 5 Americans sometimes or always feel isolated from others. The coronavirus pandemic and social distancing have only made the problem worse. This is also important to remember because research has shown that loneliness is as detrimental to our health as smoking and obesity. And so why does this problem exist? A hint: It’s not about social media. If anything, social media is a symptom of this disease, not the cause. The real reason loneliness has become so prevalent is that we have not done a good job of making time for our relationships. Right now, we give our relationships whatever scraps are left over. We might spend a few minutes with our loved ones here and there and we might call a friend up every once in a while. If we want to combat this problem, we have to make time for the people that matter most. How have you handled loneliness over the past six months? #Connection #Relationships #Health #MentalHealth …see more

Identities are powerful. They can help us build the self-image we want. Whether the behavior is related to what we eat, how we treat others, or how we manage distraction, adopting an identity can help shape our behavior to reflect our values. This is why I look for opportunities to label myself as indistractable. For instance, when I’m working from home, I tell my wife and daughter that I’m indistractable prior to starting a focused work block. I use my phone’s “Do Not Disturb” function to send an auto-reply message stating that I’m indistractable to anyone who might contact me during my focused time. I even printed t-shirts with the word “INDISTRACTABLE” across the chest to reinforce my identity whenever I look in the mirror or someone asks me about my shirt. By adopting and reinforcing an identity of who we want to become, we can get closer to living our values. How do you identify and how does that help you live your values? #Identity #Values #Productivity …see more

With so much panic and so many updates around the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to focus on the things we can control -- social distancing, checking in on our loved ones, staying productive while working from home. The Indistractable message is perhaps more important than ever since so many of us seemingly can’t stop checking our phones every few minutes. It’s important to remain vigilant as we figure out how to handle these difficult times. #Indistractable …see more

59% of Americans cannot pay a $500 bill. 78% say they live paycheck to paycheck. It is not realistic to expect people to be politically functional if they are dealing with scarcity day-to-day. We need to secure people's future with UBI to move forward.

How inspiring is this... Pro Athletes are using LinkedIn to build a second career. With more time to think about life after football, players like Josh Martin, have been using LinkedIn to grow their community and gain knowledge. Athletes tend to hit retirement early in their late 20s or 30s, and they have a whole life ahead of them. But they too are not always prepared to manage many aspects of their life. As "influencers" they also leverage LinkedIn to gain brand and endorsement deals. Even before COVID19, players had to deal with uncertainty. To prepare for uncertainty, players have put more emphasis on business education and financial empowerment over the last decade. Use LinkedIn to: 🍗 Network 🍗 Build an audience/community 🍗 Build business partnerships What's next? What are you doing on LinkedIn to build your next career? Cannot wait to hang out and do work in a cafe again. 2020 is a strange year. Both surreal and wonderful. Surreal, as COVID-19 has shifted the way we work. Exponentially forcing us to communicate more online. Working from home. Working remotely. I've always worked remotely and the shift wasn't a dramatic change. But I did feel a strong sense of cabin fever. Imagine being stuck in one place since February? I live about 15mins away from my mum and I wasn't allowed to visit her. I tend to travel around the world frequently and this is the first time in almost 10 years where I stayed in one location for more than 6 months. It's only been a few weeks since the lockdown has been uplifted. 2 weeks of zero cases. Well done, Melbourne. It's been wonderful too. Tools like my Lenovo Yoga has allowed me to focus and grow my business online. Again, I cannot wait to visit places like FAB9 , work in a cafe, and cultivate my creativity with beautiful coffee and cafes. #stringtheory on #work …see more

“I lost followers today” For new and content creators, losing followers does sound like the end of the world. The amount of effort to create it. It hurts when some people dislike it. Let’s reframe the narrative: it’s not dislike, it’s lack of resonance. Let’s also be real. When growing an audience, you should expect to lose followers. It’s part of the process. You rather lose followers who don’t align with your values and vision. A great audience has your ideal volks, folks who get it and want to engage with you and your message. Losing followers means they don’t fit the ideal volk type and they filter out. It can also be that it’s bad content 🤣 But if you continually provide high value and you’re on path of amplifying your voice. That’s authentic. Maintain your truth while creating. Your voice is equally an important, maybe more. That’s your creativity. That’s your truth. Also, who cares about losing a Joe or Joan. Have fun creating. #stringtheory on #personalbranding …see more

Brand positioning! What kind of channel are you? A client asked me: “I have so many things I want to talk about, like I listed 10 of them. Where should I start? Which one should I focus on?” If we break it down - 10 topics means 10% energy for each topic. Urghhh, It also shows that there’s a lack of focus. When you’re starting out, you don’t want to dilute your branding, it will confuse so many people. Nor would it be memorable because a consistent and solid brand remains trustworthy. Imagine KFC decided to bring beef into the menu...🤬 Typically, I advise business to focus on the $$$ Consider how you position yourself as a channel: 🍗 what’s a topic that will reinforce your reputation? 🍗 what brings in client or the chicken? 🍗 what are you passionate about? 🍗 what’s a good market niche? Focus! Today, I’m working on the 2nd chapter of the playbook. I’m writing the formulas for a personal brand statement. I like to refer to my member, Ben Davidson , I love how hyper focus he is. ⭕️ He is the go-to-channel for all things jeep! How clear is his brand?! A good brand is clear.
