McDonald’s recently posted a statement on its website, soon after a recent TikTok video featuring its food went viral. The video shows a woman’s reveal of a McDonald’s hamburger and fries she claims has been in her closet for more than 20 years--without rotting or decomposing. There’s only one problem: McDonald’s response doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in its food. The statement is pretty bad. Just check out the first line: “In the right environment, our burgers, like most other foods, could decompose.” Emphasis on the word, “could.” Yikes. Sadly, McDonald’s missed a major opportunity to change the narrative around its food. What we got instead was a half-hearted attempt that wasn’t very well thought through. Let’s break down what makes the fast food giant’s statement such a disaster, and pick out some lessons learned. (Read more in today's column.) #mcdonalds #tiktok #emotionalintelligence #communication #leadership #PRadvice #eqapplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Asian corporations now account for 43% of the world’s largest 5,000 companies, contributing $19 trillion in revenue to the world economy every year. My colleagues at the McKinsey Global Institute crunched the numbers: ** Asia was the destination for $1 of every $2 in new investment in the past decade; 43 percent of the world’s top 5,000 firms by revenue are headquartered in the region. ** The capital influx has not resulted in higher economic profit; Asia accounts for half of the deterioration in global economic profits from $726 billion to an economic loss of $34 billion from 2005-07 to 2015-17. ** The decline in global economic profitability over the decade largely reflects the cyclical energy and materials sector, European finance, and Chinese capital allocation to value-destroying sectors. ** Pockets of economic-profit-generating excellence can be found in several sectors across Asia. The opportunity: Asia could unlock $440 billion of incremental economic profit from two major levers: turning around troubled companies and capturing companies’ latent potential to create more profit champions. A few observations of the exceptional leaders I've had the privilege to work with over the years. #leadership
When do you say "I'm sorry?" Sometimes "I'm sorry" is a default response in a situation where we really need to say "thank you" instead. That's how we can recognize the inconvenience we've caused and express our gratitude. Try: "Thank you for your patience" instead of "I'm sorry I'm late because (insert flimsy excuse here)." Try: "Thanks for your flexibility" instead of "I'm sorry I missed that deadline." This small change in vocabulary shifts the focus from us (and our often irrelevant excuses) to the people we have impacted with our behavior. And when a genuine apology is needed, the words "I'm sorry" are the starting point, not the end, to making retribution. …see more
