However, it seems that a spike in dog adoptions during COVID-19 is one positive outcome that we can feel good about, as adoptions increased significantly in March and April. This has been true for my entire life and it’s even truer now: all healthcare workers and those doing ‘first response’ work are our National Treasures. I want to thank Google and Amazon for entering the patient-end of healthcare. I know loads of companies trying to break into the "back end" with technology applications and the like but it takes real corporate bravery to enter the "front door" where doctors, patients and nurses are staring you down! Me? I love it and giggle at the thought of how many healthcare providers and hospital systems will be annoyed because 'these companies are trying to practice medicine.' And, incidentally might migrate patients away from them.... I've always had a strange relationship with EEG sensors. I used Muse® by Interaxon Inc. before to learn to meditate better but had to stop using it otherwise I have no chance of reaching mindfulness with a gadget on my head. I used NeuroSky to learn to focus (to fly a little drone around - it's on my YouTube channel), but it was only for fun. I just gave a talk to an innovator group within a pharma company about how such a company could prepare for the era of personalized medicine. They were especially interested in how the supply chain should change and what skills or mindset people working on it should have. I described how digital health and personalized medicine go hand in hand and what methods I use to forecast the near future of healthcare. Giving virtual keynotes seems to be the new norm and I definitely learn new tricks: * People sitting in their homes are much more comfortable asking challenging questions and appreciate being challenged more than in person * Talking into a camera is just so inhuman - as many people tend to turn off their cameras while listening to a talk (understandably), you basically talk to a camera with passion * As my team controls every technical detail, the opportunities for sharing spectacular content and a range of content types are just endless More to come as all my keynotes are shifting to the virtual space. There are some exiting studies that came out in the last 1-2 weeks. Topol's team compared the accuracy of deep learning algorithms to that of medical professionals in making diagnoses on medical images.
