Best Buy is now a health care device sales site—Want a good deal on a TV and a device to monitor your heart while watching The Bachelorette? While I’m a big fan of focusing on our “health” even when we are not in the doctors’ office, I’m not sure I trust all vendors (like Best Buy)! So, if Best Buy is now a health care company (at least in part), who else is getting into the game? Costco? Movie theaters? 7-11? Not sure about you, but I’m not that trusting...for now, I’ll stick to traditional players (doctors, hospitals, clinics) and trusted crossover brands (like Apple or Amazon). …see more

Health= Body + Mind... Not Just The Body. The Bio-Medical Model Of Healthcare focuses largely on the germ theory as the dominant diagnoses and treatment approach: Got an infection? We’ve got an antibiotic! Got a laceration? We’ve got sutures. All great stuff for the body. But the mind requires a different sort of medical model—one that includes enough resources (and humanity) to have time to evaluate, diagnosis and treat. And unlike physical ailments that can be treated with sutures or antibiotics, these patients need a holistic approach which often includes stable housing, good counseling and a network of support. We continue to separate out the Body from the Mind at our own, collective expense... We did the required research and published this study with a simple goal in mind: to recognize all FDA-approved artificial intelligence based medical technologies. This is the first open access database of this sort and we are very proud of it: https://lnkd.in/e46sJBY Because there is no clear threshold used by the FDA and if you think you can still find A.I.-based technologies on the website of FDA, just give it a try and you will be as frustrated as we were. Since publishing the study, a lot of submissions have been flowing in and we, the three authors, don't have the capacity to check every resource, which is the job the FDA should be doing anyway. Yesterday, I had the chance to attend the event (virtual, of course) of deeplearning.ai and hear Andrew Ng and Eric Topol, MD speak about how medicine could attract more A.I. developers. Dr. Topol highlighted some real-life clinical examples where A.I. can help (from radiology to dermatology) and he also pointed out the major flaws with the field today (no prospective studies, only a few clinical trials, not enough data, among others). Dr. Ng told a story about how his physician father wrote in a book in the 1980s that machines will not replace physicians but would only sharpen their decision-making and clinical judgment.
