Is your company a welcoming place? Every organization greets new employees with coffee cake, donuts and an assortment of onboarding programs. It's what happens after the festivities that makes the difference. Truly welcoming companies foster a culture that: • Makes space for the new and unexpected • Values all experiences regardless of age and rank • Promotes curiosity about different points of view • Models a willingness to listen and set aside assumptions • Rewards asking open-ended questions • Encourages colleagues to set aside ego in pursuit of mutual goals • Demonstrates a commitment to inclusive language What does a welcoming culture look like to you? …see more
Two of my favorite words -- "Yes and" -- are indispensable during negotiations or tense conversations. "No but" often becomes our default phrase when the stakes are high. We're afraid to use "yes" in these situations because we mistakenly think it's synonymous with agreement. "Yes" means: "I hear you. I understand what you're saying." "And" means: "Now I will share my take on the situation." Replacing "No but" with "Yes and" isn't a magic wand. But this simple substitution improves the chances of breaking up a conversational logjam. When we feel acknowledged, we're less defensive and more open to listening to other points of view. At the very least, the door to moving forward remains ajar instead of closed. …see more
I may be wrong, but I really think we are obsessed with the idea that this bizarre enforced interim is especially indicative of the future. We have a more organic future, enriched by new tech but where people behave as they wish, with the more typical constraints of life on show. Will be interesting to see. I just don't think people didn't realize the internet existed before. …see more
Nothing will ever be more complex than Health Insurance in the USA. I literally don't understand 0.01% of it. - It's like some kafkaesque process with products like "Aetna Medicare Assure Plus (HMO D-SNP) H1609-043" , Oscar came along with a nice font to make it consumer friendly and offers 6 types of Bronze cover alone: like Oscar Bronze Simple Oscar Bronze Classic PCP Copay Oscar Bronze Classic Next 2 Oscar Bronze HDHP Why can't it be like other insurance where you can get good, better, best. Or be guided through by, perhaps even, a chatbot. If anyone is an expert and I can pay them to help me, please let me know. …see more
True disruption is where what replaces the incumbent doesn’t look like it used to, where the new problems faced are different, it's not a tweak, it's not a refinement, it's a totally different design process with an entirely new set of principles and criteria to design around. E.g The Lightbulb is a totally different form factor to the Candle, LED's now disrupt incandescent bulbs. Facebook isn't a better Newspaper. Wikipedia is totally different to an encyclopedia. GPS systems disrupted Lighthouses, but automated lighthouses didn't disrupt manned lighthouses. Drones now compete for Firework displays. Napster disrupted CD makers. Vaping isn't a better cigarette, it's a different thing The Railway disrupted Canals. Dollar Shave Club didn't disrupt Gillette. Away didn't disrupt Samsonite, Vice didn't disrupt media, etc etc. It gets harder with things like Dyson, Uber, Tesla, …see more
