Today is hard for me! I want to be excited for my friends. #twojamies I met Jamie Shulman on the phone in 2014 and convinced him to come to a Pool party where all the cool cloud kids were hanging out. I introduced him to a bunch of cool CPAs and Xero was a sponsor and it was the beginning of their journey within the accounting channel. I knew absolutely in my heart that they would be acquired someday because they had something special. At that time their app changed my workflow and the ability to deliver financials in near real-time. I gave them lots of honest feedback, the good and the bad. Doesn’t everyone want to hear that their UI looks like someone threw up on the screen! They listened and evolved. And now they are gone! Yes it’s good for them, but bittersweet for me. My feelings will resolve and I will adapt but today I will mourn. Debates continue to rage over whether flattening the curve will help, whether economic costs will be worse than human lives, whether hydroxychloroquine will help, whether the BCG vaccine is protecting India, whether the recovery will be V/U/W/L-shaped, whether making noise and lighting lamps help lift spirits... I have managed to stay away from all of them because I DON'T KNOW. What I DO know for sure (to borrow Oprah's phrase) is that a virus, by definition, is contagious, so we need to avoid future waves. That we need to not only change our habits, but we need a system to slow it down. I believe the #AarogyaSetu app is built on good technology to help alert us when we are close to people who are infectious. So I have installed it. What are some helpful tools to stay indistractable while working? I’ve long been a vocal advocate of timboxing -- the practice of planning out exactly what you’re going to do and for how long you’re going to do it. But as anybody who has worked in an hectic work environment knows, this is easier said than done. Schedules conflict. Meetings come up. Miscommunications happen. This is also why I recommend schedule syncing. Talk to your boss or team at the beginning of each week and explain, “this is how I’ve scheduled my time and these are the things I’m working on this week.” This will allow you all to agree on your schedule or rework it if needed, it’ll eliminate costly mixups, and it’ll help everybody stay indistractable. What’s the difference between addiction and overuse? The majority of the time we’re discussing tech “addiction”, we’re actually describing overuse Addiction is a pathology. It’s defined as a persistent compulsive dependency on a behavior or substance that harms the user. It’s something that’s incredibly hard to stop. Addiction has three components: - It requires a person with a predilection for addiction - It requires the product - It requires pain that the user cannot cope with in a healthier manner It’s only in the confluence of these three things that addiction occurs. If one of these three factors is missing, addictions don’t form. Understanding the difference is important because when we throw these terms around so loosely, they become meaningless. It’s disrespectful to people actually suffering from addiction and it disempowers people who pathologize a problem they could do something about if they tried. Part of what determines our ability to change our behavior is whether or not we believe we can. When we claim that we’re “addicted” to something when we’re not, we give that thing too much power over us. On a recent AMA, I was asked, “How do you stay Indistractable with a toddler around?” There are many techniques that you can use to prevent distraction from kids. We think about distraction as something that comes from technologies and anyone who's a parent knows that kids can be really distracting, right? You want to do one thing at a time and yet you find that your kid needs you. To some degree, that's part of being a parent. That also shouldn't necessarily be an excuse. There are lots of things that we can do to prevent distraction… and it's not rocket science. It comes down to planning ahead. What do you do when you have a really TOXIC competitor?! People that don't have a strong mindset and insecurities can do crazy and impulsive things... 🙄 Perhaps you are running for the same promotion? Do you offer the same solutions in the same area? Do you speak about the same topics? Rising tides lift all ships! ALWAYS RISE ABOVE! Know WHO you are And the VALUES that make you exceptional. Reach out to your closest competitors. Introduce yourself and find a way to collaborate! Find OPPORTUNITY in potential THREATS. Grow together. Every time I speak, 👉I leave references of other speakers for future needs/events. When I meet with a client that isn't a fit or I simply don't have the capacity, 👉I introduce them to my competitors and colleagues! When I encounter a competitor that only pushes negativity, 👉I move on and never look back 😜 Plus, when you give, you always receive double in return...
