Steve Jobs is best known for conducting one of the most stunning business turnarounds in history: leading Apple from the brink of bankruptcy to become the most valuable company in the world. But many who worked with the famous founder had a love/hate relationship with their boss. Yes, he was inspiring and innovative. But he could also be overbearing, impatient, arrogant. In fact, it was those latter traits that led to Jobs infamously leaving Apple back in 1985, as Jobs and Apple's board simply couldn't see eye to eye. In the eyes of many, Jobs was a "brilliant jerk." So why is it, you may ask, that in a world that seems to increasingly value collaboration and soft skills like emotional intelligence, do brilliant jerks continue to succeed? The answer's not as simple as you think. (Read more in today's column.) #apple #emotionalintelligence #SteveJobs #management #leadership #brilliantjerks #eqapplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
When a person tells you about a personal struggle, it can be difficult to feel empathy. It's easy to think, "Well, I've been through that before. Toughen up!" But this won't do any good for your relationship. Try and resist the urge to judge, to interrupt and share your personal experience, or to propose a solution. Instead, focus on understanding: how the person feels, and why they feel that way. Friend and colleague Dr. Hendrie Weisinger illustrates it perfectly this way: “If a person says, ‘I screwed up a presentation,’ I don’t think of a time I screwed up a presentation—which I have and thought, no big deal. Rather, I think of a time I did feel I screwed up, maybe on a test or something else important to me. It is the feeling of when you failed that you want to recall, not the event.” Of course, you’ll never be able to imagine exactly how another person feels. But trying will get you a lot closer than you would be otherwise. Without trust, there can be no love, no friendship, no lasting connection between people. But where there is trust, there is motivation to act. If you trust someone is looking after your best interests, you will do almost anything that person asks of you. So, how can you build trust? By doing the following: 1. Listen 1st. 2. Show empathy. 3. Be authentic. 4. Set the example. 5. Be helpful. 6. Disagree and commit. 7. Be humble. 8. Be transparent. 9. Commend sincerely and specifically. Of course, some of these are easier said than done. How can you build these qualities into your daily habits? And companies, how can you build this into your organizational culture?
