Help me understand. We have shootings in workplaces and that doesn't stop the way we treat violence and guns. We have shootings in an elementary school. Same outcome. We have shootings at a concert venue. Same outcome. We have shootings in churches (most recently in Texas). Same outcome. We have shootings on campuses. Same outcome. Safe places -- work, worship, schools -- are now unsafe. Why aren't we doing anything about guns and gun violence? Last time I checked, these guns were used to kill innocent people, not animals in the wild and not for self-protection. Without some change, we will not see change in the violence is protected places. What kind of world is that? Oh, we blame mental illness. Perhaps there has been mental diminution in those who have been the shooters. But, isn't there a link between access to weapons (their purchase and continued use) and gun violence? Might it be time to reconsider--finally --quality background checks, limits on numbers of purchases and a national database that works. What will it take? Post being shot, even Rep. Scalise was not against guns. …see more
Here is what worries me: kids are listening to the news and the way people are treating and talking to each other. Then, they are carrying this into schools and into their homes. We are role-modeling poorly. What are our kids copying? Harassment, bullying, offensive rhetoric, fighting, hidden agendas, mini-purges. No wonder classrooms are all a flutter. Distrust and distain and disrespect are surrounding us. Time to push back -- for decency, dialogue that is respectful and drama-free human engagement that focuses on respect and what binds us together. Time 4 calm. …see more

Many founders and executives I'm working with as an advisor/consultant asked me questions like: 1) "Should we hire a VP of Product" at this stage of our company or product cycle"? 2) How do we know if we need a Director of Product or VP of Product at this stage? 3) If we need to hire a VP of Product, what kind of a Product Leader we should look for? By responding to these types of questions, I realized there are a lot of unknowns in the journey of hiring a VP of Product and at times this could be a daunting task for founders. For those reasons, I decided to work on a blog series explaining all of the above. I'm pumped about the contents! I hope you are too. Please comment below if you think this will be helpful/interesting information for you and your teams. Also, please add any other questions you may have related to these topics and I will make sure to either cover them in these blog posts or in the future ones. #productmanagement #productleadership #VPofProduct #bestproducts #hiringproductmanagers #startups #foundersdecisions #founderslife #productmanager #productexecutive #recruitingtips …see more

Pop-Up Barber Shops Help Memory Impaired! Finally some uplifting news—kind people doing generous things. Here is a story of a barber setting up ‘make-shift’ barbershops in nursing homes for people with dementia: Lenny White gathers up his supplies for the day: a red, white and blue striped barber pole, hair clippers and a table-top jukebox -- all the makings of a pop-up barbershop, catered to a very special group of clients. Mr. White is a barber who gives hair cuts to those with dementia—in the nursing home. Dementia has been recognized as a public health priority by the World Health Organization, and for good reason. According to the WHO, there are 50 million people living with dementia around the world, with an additional 10 million being diagnosed every year. There is currently no cure for dementia, so healthcare providers are turning to life-enrichment alternatives for their patients, meaning services like White's are likely to increase. Selected Excerpt: "It [helps] bring back memories of times gone by," White said. "Trying to bring a bit of positivity into the day that can be quite difficult for them." …see more
Perhaps getting smaller-not larger-is the way to (try to) delight patients... Big mergers are all around us but nothing about “bigness” equates to customer-focus, attentiveness or responsive. What patients-no people-want whether they are shopping for clothes or health care, is to “be seen” and to be recognized as an individual. So in this era of growth, it’s wise to think “growth” can take the form of “small, intimate, parlor-sized.” Selected Excerpt : “When they’ve run out of opportunities to open new locations, how do they continue to grow? The shift to small format has to do with getting closer to the customer.” …see more
Revolutionary technologies bring a healthier future. In my book, “My Health Upgraded”, I’m sharing the most exciting questions (and providing answers) about the future of medicine. In the upcoming month, I’ll share with you one question from my book each week and provide a short (but sweet) answer. Question 2: Could doctors literally look through patients? In short: YES. With the help of mixed reality. A surgeon preparing for a complicated brain surgery will be able to literally look into the patient and plan the entire procedure while zooming in and out of the patients’ problematic area even before making the first incision. This is how it works: A hospital receives the MR images and a mixed reality device renders it to a 3 dimensional holographic image. A perfect example on how digital health could help international travel get back to its feet. “At present, COVID-19 test results for travel are frequently shared on pieces of paper—or photos of the paper—from unknown labs, often written in languages foreign to those inspecting them. The lack of a standard test result format and certification system leave room for confusion and falsification of results.” Check out how CommonPass aims to help safely reopen the borders and the role of digital COVID-19 health passports! #travelduringCOVID #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #COVID19 #COVID_19 #coronavirus …see more

Recently, I shared a report that stated: "It takes roughly seven patients presenting after an abnormal pulse alert to establish one clinically actionable cardiovascular diagnosis." I described that you cannot expect one digital health technology to solve a medical issue in itself. And you cannot avoid using such technologies in healthcare to provide sufficient care. This is why digital health is a cultural transformation where you can't just drop a technology into the system and expect everything to get better. You need both patients and medical professionals to be on the same page, discuss the expectations and side effects and work together by using that technology. This is the topic that we address in the newest article on The Medical Futurist . #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more
While I write often about the limitations of artificial intelligence and what it can really offer in practice today, sometimes I come across developments in A.I. that not only blow my mind away but also depict an exciting vision of the future of healthcare. Look at this: In some cases, patients need injections with an iodine-based dye (radiocontrast) to make their organs more visible in scans. But some patients can’t take the dye. So researchers developed a GAN (generative adversarial network) that generates labeled, undyed CT images of lesions on kidneys, spleens, and livers. They added these images to real-world training data to improve performance of a segmentation model that marks lesions in diagnostic scans. As it's really hard to get enough quality medical data to train the algorithm on and labeled medical data is even harder to find, GANs are making it easier and less expensive to create large, annotated datasets for training A.I. diagnostic tools. #artificialintelligence #ai #aihealthcare #digitalhealth #futureofhealthcare #themedicalfuturist …see more
Accenture released a report based on a survey that around 2000 participants filled out in the US. They conclude that before COVID-19, growth in consumer digital health adoption had stalled. While the cohort is small and only US-based, I understand the criticism around digital health tools and services. My main concern is that they call it virtual care. I have a great relationship with my GP, and when I share some data with her about a potential health issue and she helps via digital communication, I don't feel that it's different from when she attends me in person. Digital health in the eyes of its users and medical professionals will always look like something that doesn't want to work, while the solution's been here all along: whether you provide care in person or by using a way of digital communication, it's just care. Stop calling it virtual care, stop alienating this from everyday medicine and accept that digital health will bring a cultural transformation. This is the new norm where the use of technologies is inevitable in caring for patients. This misconceptualization derails the whole study. Instead of emphasizing the differences between virtual and in-person care, it should examine ways to improve care in general. And that question is independent from technologies. …see more
I can't tell you how proud and excited I'm now to share the newest e-book from The Medical Futurist with you. This time, we decided to try to tackle the beast: the issue of privacy in the digital health era. While the e-book focuses on practical recommendations and examples about YOUR privacy, it presents details on three levels: 1. Healthcare institutions holding on to your data (your medical records) 2. Medical data stored in the technologies you use (from fitness trackers to genetic tests) 3. Medical data stored where you aren’t aware of (from A.I. to the cloud) These three levels should be at the forefront of every privacy discussion going forward. They encompass the traditional, the new and the future spheres where our data is and will increasingly be stored. I truly hope you will find this e-book useful and I look forward to your feedback so we can keep on expanding it. #ebook #privacy #digitalhealth #medicaldata #healthcare #futureofhealthcare #healthtech #themedicalfuturist …see more
If you ever wanted to get a good summary of the major ethical and legal concerns that will arise in the age of medical A.I., see this short paper in JAMA. It describes what happens with the privacy of patients and healthcare staff when computer vision-driven ambient intelligence is available in hospitals. It also addresses how consent could be obtained and what methods exist for defending the privacy of all healthcare personnel. It even touches upon whether such recordings could be used in legal cases and in general, how to take these into considerations when A.I.-based systems keep on improving healthcare's efficiency.
