Today marks five years to the day that I began working at The Verge full time. I moved into a more central role as creative director of Vox Media networks in August, 2018, but the preceding two and a half years were the most proflic of my creative career to date. To mark this anniversary, I put a retrospective gallery together of some of my favorite photos from my time at The Verge …see more

Back in 1947, when the legendary comic book writer Stan Lee was just starting his career, he published an article with advice on how to break into the industry. As part of his article, he shared several useful writing tips that happen to be applicable to any type of writing. I was surprised to find this article and thought I’d share what Stan Lee wrote about the craft of writing: #comics #comicbook #writing #writers …see more
In a lecture he delivered in 1996 on the origins of life, Stephen Hawking shared this remarkable insight into a simple, man-made technology that, he argued, has had just as profound an impact on human evolution as DNA.
"Our ranking of business schools is based on the return on investment achieved by the class of 2012. We examined more than 100 schools and reached out to 17,500 alumni around the globe. We compared graduates’ earnings in their first five years out of business school to their opportunity cost (two years of forgone compensation, tuition and required fees) to arrive at a five-year MBA gain, which is the basis for the final rank." …see more

I was asked my top five tips on #personalbranding : 1. Brands matter. We live in a world of options and commoditization. Whether you’re an individual or a corporation, your brand is what distinguishes you from all other lookalike options, and defines your place in the world. 2. A brand is a promise. Branding goes deeper than colors, font, logos, or a headshot. It’s a promise you make to the world; this is the kind of experience you will have with me. Live up to that promise, consistently. 3. Perception is reality. Marketing, at its core, is about changing perception. Building a personal brand is about being thoughtful about the perception the world has about you. Use it to get you where you want to go, not to satisfy your ego. Clarify your end-game. 4. Ask for three words. If you’re stuck defining yourself in a pithy way (it’s not easy) ask friends and colleagues to describe you in three words. Look for patterns. 5. Be yourself. Don’t try to be the person you think you should be. Have confidence in what you bring to the table. Your best brand strengths come from what differentiates you. I’m grateful to Tony Mwebia of the #MenEndFGM organization for his New Year’s blogpost about a important summit that occurred in Nairobi last month. The meeting convened religious leaders’ and scholars from all the #FGM hotspot counties in #Kenya . I’m greatly encouraged by this report, and urge other countries to follow suit. These kind of high-level conversations will be critical in developing policies that will strictly punish this horrific practice.
