Vindicated! Paleo...Shmaleo. Here’s to Bread! For years I’ve expressed my utter disregard for those friends of mine who claim they believe in the ‘paleo diet’ as an actual (historically accurate) food diet. I’ve always said it’s a fad diet and that people who choose to be on this diet should just admit to it. And like all fads, it’s made-up to promote some sort of mindset or ‘evolved’ eating approach. Which is why a friend of mine (who has no allergies or sensitivity to any food products) won’t eat any kind of bread, grain, legumes, dairy, sugar or any number of other things. (Meanwhile coconut and cow are fine...) I’ve tried explaining to this friend that none of the foods she is eating today were even around 10,000 years ago and not to mention that the average lifespan back then was 45, so that I’m not really sure why we are eager to reproduce that diet. Anyway, as a lover of bread, I was tickled pink to read this article about how bread is in fact ‘paleo.’ Does that mean all those paleo books need to be re-written??? I Am Not Different Than You Who doesn’t know about the boys who were trapped in the cave? It’s a funny thing—this is a story that opened the Evening News shows, and has been part of Americans daily talk news over the last two weeks. We’ve cheered for them, prayed for them, rooted for them. We gravitate towards stories that are suspenseful and hopeful—in our collective hearts we want everyone to ‘win,’ especially when it comes to the underdog, like these young boys appeared to be. (Who wouldn’t be an underdog trapped in a cave, two miles from freedom?) During their battle for survival, we learned that those boys are like our young ones: Sweet, resilient and hopeful. It reminds us that the human spirit to love others and our capacity to care about each other is something we all have in common regardless of where we live, the country we call home or the color of our skin. The global community of A.I. developers really came together to address issues raised by COVID-19. There are some interesting projects launching these days. For example, Hermes Ribeiro Sant Anna, a machine learning engineer in São Paulo, Brazil, built a web app that highlights surfaces prone to coronavirus contamination by human touch. I've been reading science fiction books since I was 6. I have a few favorite authors such as Stanislaw Lem, Arthur C. Clarke or Ernest Cline. I read so many new books but it rarely happens that an author surprises me, not to say that he or she becomes my favorite author. But man, I finally got a hold on Ted Chiang's Stories of Your Life and Others and it's like I have been looking for his writings all along. Mind-blowingly fresh, deep and scientific.
