Here is a link to my newest piece; it offers a counter-intuitive approach to enabling change -- across any discipline although the focus is education. Ponder it and share thoughts. If we want change (and we need change), we need to change how we think about change. …see more

Zoom’s focus on “Happiness”, first that of its customers and then that of its employees, was one of the key contributors to its success. Sounds familiar? It reminded me of Zappos culture of “Happiness” and best customer service. We know those things work. Why it’s so much easier for some companies to make “happiness” a centralized part of their being and others totally miss making happiness (of customers and then employees) #1 priority. #customersatisfaction #customerhappiness #customerobsessed #zoomipo …see more

American Ingenuity: Get Healthcare in Mexico So, American doctors, American healthcare organizations, American insurance companies and American employers are figuring out how to provide excellent healthcare—-Do it in Mexico!... Yup—if American healthcare has become to expensive (or greedy) then the market will self-correct to maximize efficiency ...this is capitalism at its purest. But in this case we end up undercutting our own selves... Sure, we can have our own employers allow us to hire our own American doctors to perform surgery in American certified hospitals located in other countries because it will be less expensive, but doesn’t that just seem like a big work-around to a broken system? Not to be too simplistic, but why not just lower the costs and fees on everything here, in our own country, so we can stay here to get our care?? Selected Excerpt: “The high prices charged at American hospitals make it relatively easy to offer surgical bargains in Mexico: In the United States, knee replacement surgery costs an average of about $30,000 — sometimes double or triple that — but at the Mexican hospital , it is only $12,000...” ——— LinkedIn Top Voice Healthcare 2015, 2016, 2017 …see more

My Professional Pet-Peeves: Ignoring Email Every one has their own list on what bugs them at work and the article below has several of the “standard” items (like don’t interrupt others). But for me, my top Pet-Peeve is when people do not return emails. They go “radio silence.” I understand not returning “sales pitch” email but thats not what I’m referring to here. I’m talking about someone you have had professional interactions with not acknowledging your email. How much effort is required to just return the email and say “not interested.” Or, “I’m busy now and can’t respond.” When you don’t reply to email it’s a reflection of who you are, not who I am. Being respectful and courteous is the right thing to do. And you will receive the same in return. …see more

Family Dog Dies Because of Reckless and Insensitive Flight Attendants. As it happens, United Airlines kills more dogs than other airlines. This is not only a very sad, sad story but the way United Airlines handled the disaster is well...a disaster. Trite apologies simply do not cut it any longer. Over the last several years I've decided I'm only giving my money to those companies that are worthy of my money. This is true for restaurants and airlines, and health care providers too. I want to be valued and I want authenticity. For Peet's Sake, I'm paying for it so I should receive this! …see more

Another device combining a BP and ECG monitor: Check out how the Withings BPM Core works! Its design is more like a traditional digital health device, with more reliance on the tech side. To begin using it, I had to connect it to my smartphone app (Healthmate) and also to my WiFi. This might be an issue for people not being good at dealing with technologies or simply if you don’t have a WiFi connection readily available. Thankfully, you don't need the phone after that and you can take measurements by the touch of a single button. My detailed review on the Withings BPM Core and a comparison with the Viatom Armfit+ is coming up on Thursday! #withings #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #wearable #health #healthy …see more

Let's tackle the elephant in the room: 2021! Nearing the end of 2020 and we are globally far from seeing the end of the pandemic that ruled (and ruined) 2020. Every day we see hundreds of thousands of new cases of coronavirus infections, with the WHO reporting a record one-day rise, while people have hard times complying with the strict safety measures again. We all wait for this nightmare to stop, but will it ever? How long, ‘till we need to keep masks on and stay away from grandma? After this dystopian 2020, how are we looking at 2021? I designed three scenarios that hopefully help you prepare for 2021. Which one is the most likely in your view? Would you add any other scenarios? Let me know in the comments. #covid #covid19 #future #forecasting #themedicalfuturist #healthcare #forecast #futureofhealthcare #digitalhealth …see more

Lindsay Fallow is a software developer turned science journalist, who is coping with multiple endocrine problems including adrenal insufficiency and a type-1 variant diabetes, plus severe asthma and gastric issues. All these medical conditions need a complex skill-set to manage them daily. Professional and personal alike - and experiences that medical records can't store. So, she created a one-pager where she included bits and pieces about her personal and professional life. Fallow listed what technologies and social media she uses, trackers such as Fitbit, Garmin or Strava. She even entered all the resources and assets that help her manage her condition, starting from her supportive partner until the medical alert dog. She described what symptoms she struggles with and what her current goals are regarding managing her illness. It is clear, concise and might be very helpful to doctors. It might also be useful to you. Check out what you can achieve with a patient CV and how you should start with it! #patientCV #DigitalHealth #EPatient #EPatients #PatientEmpowerment …see more

"I have a data set on the 154 responses from about 600 consults. Video works best: about 95% of patients say the video consult was worthwhile or very worthwhile. The biggest surprise was the extremely high level of satisfaction. I asked if patients would have valued the remote experience the same outside of lockdown. 60% said that this would have worked at any time. That has spurred us on to offer video permanently." I just had an exciting discussion with Jonathan Bell , Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at Wimbledon Clinics . He shared his experience about how their clinic shifted to telemedicine from one day to another when COVID hit. Including about all the peculiarities he witnessed when virtually entering his patients' homes. A new paper in npj Digital Medicine just describes how a smartphone-based microscope using deep learning could screen for sickle cell disease. I find it fascinating when research groups can combine these three things: 1) a disease that affects a lot of patients 2) a device that is already in our hands, our smartphone 3) artificial intelligence making use of the data we can capture with it Here is an excerpt: "We blindly tested this mobile sickle cell detection method using blood smears from 96 unique patients (including 32 SCD patients) that were imaged by our smartphone microscope, and achieved ~98% accuracy, with an area-under-the-curve of 0.998. With its high accuracy, this mobile and cost-effective method has the potential to be used as a screening tool for SCD and other blood cell disorders in resource-limited settings." https://lnkd.in/dd8WBSf #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #deeplearning #machinelearning #sicklecelldisease …see more

Tell me one thing that's obvious in your job but people don't know about it. Here is mine: research papers are usually behind paywalls and cost a lot to access. But authors have the right to send you the paper. If you approach me about a paper I authored, I'm allowed to send it to you for free and I'm sure all scientists would be happy to do the same. Partially due to this, all papers we publish in The Medical Futurist Institute are in open access. The downside of this is that we have to pay a lot of money to make a paper open access. But this way, anyone can read it as soon as it's published. https://lnkd.in/gZ9X-Cy #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #TMFI #research #openaccess …see more

I receive many questions about what skills physicians will need in the near future to be able to work with artificial intelligence efficiently. 1) Digital literacy is for your future what air is for breathing 2) What will you need in the world of rational calculations? Empathy 3) Networking goes online and crowds are your source of information 4) Understand and embrace patient design 5) Improve cognitive capabilities with games 8) Become a bit of a futurist yourself: I recommend you to visit Good Judgement, where you can gratify your passion towards predicting the future and thinking about various likelihoods of events. I summarized all these in this e-book too: https://lnkd.in/gEVhgWS #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #book #reading #read #ebook …see more

The question about A.I. is never technology vs humans. GM Garry Kasparov introduced the concept of advanced chess, also known as cyborg or centaur chess. He wanted to bring together human and computer skills to achieve the following results: - increasing the level of play to heights never before seen in chess; - producing blunder-free games with the qualities and the beauty of both perfect tactical play and highly meaningful strategic plans; - offering the public an overview of the mental processes of strong human chess players and powerful chess computers, and the combination of their forces. The most exciting medical studies that used machine or deep learning did not conclude that algorithms are better than physicians at doing a specific task but those that showed how the combination of computational and human cognition leads to the best results. My favorite studies in this are the ones with detecting breast cancer on slides and diabetic retinopathy on retinal images. Excellent results underscoring the notion that artificial narrow intelligence will work with medical professionals and vice versa for the best results. Have you seen other similar studies concluding the same? Photo source: Kasparov.com #digitalhealth #AI #artificialintelligence #TMFchessjourney …see more
