Mentorship means so much to me, especially on #InternationalWomenDay . My career wouldn't even be where it is today without the guidance of trailblazers like Kathryn , Marney , Marisa , Debra , Doreet , Sonia , and Maya – all amazing mentors and managers! 🙏 💜 That's why today, I'm also excited to announce the work Close the Gap Foundation and team have been tirelessly working behind-the-scenes to bolster mentorship among low-income students (pst.. we also have a new name!). 🥳 ⏰ To recap: In 2019, our team has distributed $1,500 in scholarships, logged 1,000 volunteer hours, and facilitated 15 workshops that empowered over 100 low-income young leaders. 🚀 As we plan for 2020, it became clear to us that closing the network gap was simply not enough. In order to tackle this systemic issue at its root, we needed to do more – hence a new name.
 🏔 Our vision is a future without opportunity gaps where together we can close all gaps, both visible and hidden ones. Our new name empowers and enables us to further our mission at not just closing the network gap, but also all critical gaps that impact low-income students.

It was great chatting with Wattpad co-founder and CEO Allen Lau and his wife and Wattpad co-founder and angel investor Eva Lau at a Startup Grind event in Taipei this evening. Allen shared the story of how Wattpad grew from the 1,000 initial users of their literature app in 2006 to 65 Million unique monthly active users and 4 million monthly active writers today. He also talked about the remarkable success of “The Kissing Booth,” a 2011 story turned book series written by then 15-year-old Beth Reekles that was read 19 million times on Wattpad before being adapted into an original film by Netflix. It was the most viewed and rewatched movie on Netflix when it was released a couple months ago. Despite being the size of the Netherlands, with meagre natural resources and languishing in diplomatic isolation as the rest of the world pursued relations with Beijing, in the past 50 years exports surged from less than $1bn annually to the same figure on a daily basis and GDP per capita grew from $320 to nearly $25,000 today. Equally remarkable, and probably even less likely, Taiwan has peacefully transitioned from an authoritarian one-party state to a young democracy with a woman, Tsai Ing-wen, now the fourth president since the first elections were held in 1996." …see more

A Black American woman born in Dinwiddie County, Virgina in 1930 helped the world sort itself out. Mrs. West's mathematical brilliance fueled the development of the Global Positioning System. So let's review: A Black American woman named #KatherineJohnson helped send men into outer space. A Black American woman named Gladys West helped us get to where we need to go on Earth. And in 2021, a Black American woman named Kizzmekia S. Corbett PhD helped develop the #Moderna #vaccine against #COVID19 . I don't know about you, but it sounds like a good idea to have a Black American woman in your life. For #FlashbackFriday , remembering that time back in July of 2007 when I had to cross my arms to keep from visibly trembling as I led a journalism training at the Pagak refugee camp in Northern #Uganda . It was probably the first time many of the men sitting in that circle had ever heard a woman speak in a setting like that without being given permission. Forget about LEADING the whole event. It was also only the second time I'd ever accepted a #journalism leadership role. The first was when I was President of the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) back in 1997. Now, I'm not saying that belonging to #JAWS can prepare you to work in a post-civil war zone, but let's just say it didn't hurt. Twelve years later, I'm coaching reporters in eight countries using Google Translate, Zoom, WhatsApp, Slack--by any means necessary. Now I know why I fought my way through the fear in that refugee camp. So saddened to hear of ongoing murders of #Ebola response workers in Democratic Republic of Congo. I've seen first hand how absolutely committed these men and women are to their communities, how much they are willing to risk to save lives. I've also witnessed how much Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is equally committed, compassionate and humane in that tense setting. When I think of the saying, "the perfect person for the job," I truly cannot imagine another person who could fulfill the responsibilities of Director-General of the World Health Organization during this moment in time as well as Dr. Tedros is doing. #WHO #globalhealth #HealthForAll …see more
