Being liked is obviously important for your #business . Apple comes to mind immediately as a company that presented itself as friendly and approachable and rose to the top of an industry that hadn't been noted for warmth. I started Femme n’ Fortune just 7 months ago after having a conversation with a female friend who was extremely talented, but struggling financially. I began to notice the same pattern in lots of other women - women who were intelligent, capable and driven, but struggling to make ends meet. I had a vision to bring together women of all ages, races and walks of life to support one another in business. And to be honest, for me, it’s much less about the money, and more about learning how to sustain your life using the gifts God gave you. You don’t have to struggle through life. Guess what? You too CAN make 6 (or 7) figures doing what you love!!! In the past 7 months, through Femme n’ Fortune, I’ve made incredible connections, helped countless women find job opportunities and internships, been featured in Forbes magazine, and hosted TWO networking events for women. If you want to invest (financially or otherwise), or be a part of what we’re doing, follow @femmenfortune on Instagram and get plugged in! Also: a huge thank you to Michael Henderson and Brian Taylor for supporting my vision! Thank you for using your voices and your platforms to support me, and soooo many other women! And THANK YOU to all of the women who have contributed to Femme n’ Fortune thus far, let’s continue to support one another and make ISH* happen!!! #fnf2019 …see more
I recently started the Imani Arts Foundation - a nonprofit organization providing free resources and support for youth in the entertainment space. We had our first fundraising event on May 6, 2018, and raised over $1500 dollars! A special thank you to poet Arielle Estoria, the McCreay Foundation gospel choir, and the Clavillo sisters for their awesome performances. The Imani Arts Foundation is driven by a fundamental belief in the innate power of guided creativity. Studies show that young people who have high creative potential have increased self awareness and as a result, often struggle in the area of personal identity development. Guided creative achievement, on the other hand, leads to an increase in personal growth. Our organization is designed to provide the tools and access necessary to help youth of all backgrounds and socioeconomic status discover, develop, and deliver their creative gifts in a safe space. For #MondayMotivation , believe that you have the power to make change. Because you do. You don't have to be a legend like Edna Adan Ismail to make change in your community. You don't have to have walked with Presidents and Prime Ministers to be able to commit yourself to an issue, and use whatever means you have available to help people. You don't even have to build a hospital like the one she built in #Somaliland to ensure that peple in your community can live healthier lives. In fact, be sure to buy a copy of Madame Edna's memoir, to be published by HarperCollins Publishers UK when it is released in late August. I promise you will be inspired, moved to tears, energized and elevated all at once. It will help you believe that one person CAN make a difference. Opportunity for #womeninglobalhealth : In an effort to bolster the global progress being made to support female rising stars from low- and middle-income countries, the Harvard University Women and Health Initiative and the Harvard Global Health Institute have developed a new fellowship program for Women in #GlobalHealth . Lean, Engage, Advance, Disrupt: Why a Women LEAD fellowship? Women are a driving force powering the production of health in their homes, in their communities, and as part of the global health workforce. Even though an estimated seven out of ten health workforce contributors are female, ionly 25% of high-level positions in global health are occupied by women. This MUST change. Inspiring story of Dr. Andrea Hayes-Jordan , a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pediatric surgeon whose exemplary expertise will mentor others in the field, as the incoming Head of Pediatric surgery for UNC's Children's Hospital. And yet in 1998, after graduating from Dartmouth College Medical School, she was rejected several times when she applied for pediatric surgery residencies. When her mentor stepped in to find out why, the answer was, "We can't take a chance on a black woman." Hayes-Jordan got her training in Toronto, and in 2002 became the first black, female, board-certified pediatric surgeon in the U.S. She also became the first surgeon in the world to attempt an exhausting procedure to physically remove hundreds of tumors from a child's abdomen. That procedure has quadrupled the survival rate of a previously deadly childhood cancer.
