Each of the four abilities of emotional intelligence: -self awareness -self management -social awareness -relationship management …is interconnected and naturally complements the others; however, one isn’t always dependent on another. You’ll naturally excel at certain aspects of the four abilities and display weaknesses in others. For example, you may be great at perceiving your own emotions, yet you struggle to manage those feelings. Or, consider the trait of social awareness. The ability to anticipate and understand the feelings of others can help you avoid creating unnecessary offense, a skill that makes you more likable and draws others to you. But that same attribute can become a weakness if it inhibits your ability to speak up when you should or stops you from giving critical (yet helpful) feedback for fear of how others will react. A brief lesson in empathy. The next time you struggle to see something from another person’s point of view, strive to remember the following: • You don’t have the whole picture. At any given time, a person is dealing with many factors of which you’re unaware. • The way you think and feel about a situation may be very different from one day to the next, influenced by various elements, including your current mood. • Under emotional stress, you may behave very differently than you think you would. Keeping these points in mind will affect how you view the other person and influence how you deal with them. And since each of us goes through our own struggle at one point or another, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need that same level of understanding. Years ago I was in my first role as a manager, and I experienced an exchange I’ll never forget. I chastised a team member—we’ll call him David—for a major blunder. My point was valid, but I surely could have delivered it better. David’s response was quick and cutting: “You know, you’re the kind of manager the rest of us hate.” Ouch. Of course, David could have been more tactful. But there was no use dwelling on that; there was value in this perspective. So, I took a few moments to let my emotions settle, then came back to David. I asked him why he felt the way he did, and learned from his honesty. In the end, it made me a better manager—and it showed David that I wasn’t the jerk that he thought I was. That's the value of honest feedback, even if it hurts to hear: It will help you grow... If you let it.
