I have been a fan of the band Rush since way back in 1978. My first gig was at London Wembley Arena on the Moving Pictures tour in 1980. Rush's drummer Neil Peart was and is my idol. As a teenager, I spent countless hours learning to play the drum parts of "Free Will," "YYZ," and "La Villa Strangiato," on a shitty glittery jazz kit in my bedroom (my parents had complaints from over half a mile away). Even after all that effort, I still never came close to getting it right. Peart was a master who was almost impossible to emulate but an inspiration to try anyway. Today we learned that Neil tragically passed away earlier this week. It may sound trite but I feel like I have lost a childhood friend. I can only imagine what Geddy, Alex and Neil's family are going through and they have my deepest condolences. This photo is of one of a pair of limited edition sets of Neil Peart ProMark drum sticks that I bought on the R30 tour in 2004, and the photo from the album "Permanent Waves" that I had pinned to my bedroom wall all those years ago. RIP Neil, you will be missed. …see more
How Taiwan Plans to Stay (Mostly) Covid-Free “Consider for a moment, in this time of anguish and loss and death, of mass unemployment and flattened national economies, the Twilight Zone alternate reality that is Taiwan. For months and months, life on the island has been, in a word, normal — spookily so. Weddings have been held, worry free. People have packed pro ball games, attended cello concerts and thronged night markets. Taiwan’s population is larger than Florida’s, but its Covid-19 death toll can be counted on two hands. It is the kind of off-the-charts success against the virus that has created a sinking feeling in the stomachs of many residents: How much longer can the island’s good fortune last? For Chen Shih-chung, Taiwan’s health minister and head of its epidemic command center, success is all the more reason not to waver on the bedrock of the government’s coronavirus strategy. The island has been sealed off to most visitors since March. People who are allowed to enter still have to quarantine under tight watch for two weeks, including Taiwanese citizens. #covid19leadership #covid19 #Taiwan #economy …see more

THUG LIFE - The Hate U Give Little Infants F*&*$ Everybody. In 10 years, these little brown American babies will be angry, full blown adults and voting American citizens. When they come for your tax cuts and your white privilege, when they “take” your jobs and marry your children, when they become your healthcare providers, when they represent you in Congress, write the laws, and eventually take over this country, I hope they show you the mercy that you never showed them. You think you’re afraid of them now? Ha! You should be afraid of what they will become - warriors. Save your selfish, tired arguments about this “not being their land or their home”, you raped, tortured and killed native people for this land. Or did you forget? It was never YOUR land to give away. #ICE “The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” …see more

Spent yesterday observing a #masterclass in #art , #entrepreneurship , #networking , and #communityorganizing , taught by an #arts superhero if ever there was one: John J I Chisholm . This self-described workaholic spent decades excelling in the legal and business realms before launching the Washington, DC-based PAINTS Institute , an incubator for arts and #STEMeducation for youth and a collective for local artists to build their networking and entrepreneurial skill sets. PAINTS is an acronym for “Providing Artists with Inspiration in Non-Traditional Settings.” The story of how PAINTS partnered with the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) and the historic St. John's Church to produce vibrant murals promoting peace and unity is the focus of my next feature for National Geographic . Chisholm believes that sometimes, art is pain. He's a master at turning pain into purpose. The murals at St. John's Church will be living proof. #arteducation #artsandculture #murals #muralart #muralpainting #activism #artbusiness #muralmarch …see more
