In countries where there is no zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving, a smart alcohol breathalyzer could be a real asset. It detects your blood alcohol level in less than a minute and you can even call an Uber if it's above the threshold. Some police departments started to use it too as it saves GPS, details and every measurement automatically. Have you used one? I've been testing this but there are many on the market. …see more

I just got "invited" to a "meeting" with a group of healthcare CEO's for the low, low price of $64,000. I had no idea this level of pay to play was occurring. I guess I'm lucky I made it this long without being offered such an opportunity, pretty disgusting. 💸

The contrasts continue as US markets open: The major stock indices started the trading session 1-3% higher. By contrast, the yield on 10-year US government bonds has slipped to 0.61%. The oil segment is by far the most intriguing with spot WTI now down 11% (at below $18), accentuating all sorts of internal differentials. #stocks #markets #stockmarket #equities #bonds #investing #trading #oil …see more

CNBC recently published a rarely seen interview of Bezos from 1999, and it's completely fascinating. If you watch the whole interview, you'll notice Bezos emphasizes Amazon's relentless focus on the customer over and over. Fast forward 20 years to today. It's that intense focus that's led Amazon to become one of the most successful companies in the world. One thing that I love about this video is that the interviewer, who takes an adversarial position, doesn't pull any punches. But while he repeatedly attacks Amazon and its business model, Bezos doesn't get offended. Instead, he demonstrates emotional intelligence. He calmly and confidently addresses the interviewer's charges, one by one. Check out the highlights in today's column. #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #culture #BestAdvice #PersonalDevelopment #BusinessIntelligence #careers #Amazon #JeffBezos #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
For the first time ever, the Virginia Cavaliers are NCAA basketball's national champions. It's the perfect ending to an amazing story. Last year, Virginia was ranked No. 1 in the nation--the favorites to win the national championship. But then, the unimaginable: The UMBC Retrievers, a No. 16 (read: lowest) seed in the tournament, blew the Cavaliers out by 20 points, knocking them out of contention. (In 135 attempts, a 16 seed had never defeated a 1 seed--forget the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament). How in the world could the Cavaliers bounce back from such an epic fail? In last night's postgame press conference, Virginia head coach Tony Bennett summed up his philosophy in a single, beautiful sentence: "If you learn to use it right, the adversity, it will buy you a ticket to a place you couldn't have gone any other way." This is much more than a sound bite. It's a lesson in emotional intelligence. The year was 2014. Competition was heating up between Uber and Lyft, two companies with similar visions: Use the rapidly emerging gig economy to transform the transportation industry. Uber, which had a three year head start on Lyft, was bigger, had more money, and was operating in more cities than Lyft. It was at this point that Travis Kalanick, Uber's CEO at the time, tried to eliminate his closest competition--by offering to buy Lyft. But Lyft's co-founders, Logan Green and John Zimmer, turned down the offer. It was a huge risk, one that looked like it would doom Lyft only months later. Fast forward to today. On Friday, Lyft officially beat Uber in the race to go public, raising $2.34 billion in the process. And while Uber continues to hold a larger U.S. market share, Lyft has gained major ground: Lyft says it now holds 39% of the U.S. rideshare market, up from 22% just two years ago. So, how did Lyft do it? "Our company leads with empathy." You hear a lot about the need for empathy today. The problem is, most people think they're empathetic--but when they encounter someone who has a different set of beliefs or values, empathy goes out the window. But it's important to remember: Empathy doesn't equal agreement. Chris Voss, the FBI's former lead kidnap negotiator, gets this. Voss was tasked with developing empathy for kidnappers and terrorists. He had to empathize with them--to understand their their state of mind, their reasons and motivations--if he had any chance of persuading them to give up their victims. Of course, he rarely agreed with them. (They were hardened criminals, after all.) But he did try to understand them. Every day you're faced with countless opportunities to persuade, influence, and negotiate. If the other person feels understood, they'll try to understand you. And that's the first step towards finding a win-win solution. So, remember: Empathy doesn't equal agreement. It's all about understanding.
