We are literally hard-wired for social belonging and interpersonal exchange. In addition, the amount of noise on social channels means buyers scan [and] crave stimulation, making it incredibly difficult to break through. The bottom line - now is the best time for social video. This is how Airbnb rewards social media mentions and builds their brand at the same time. I posted on Instagram about how an Airbnb host in San Diego was particularly great and tagged Airbnb in the post. I wanted them to see what a great job the hosts had done. Most companies would just like the post, maybe even comment. Airbnb sent me an email offering a little gift as a thank you for posting. I chose a screen print that arrived this week with a handwritten note. Keep in mind that I am not an Instagram influencer by any stretch. Airbnb doesn’t really "make" anything, so they need to have a freestanding brand that is built upon “owning the experience." Gestures like this are an excellent way to reinforce that brand. …see more

Back when I worked at the Detroit Free Press , I interviewed motivational guru Les Brown for a feature profile and came away amazed by his seeming energy. He made all of his success seem so easily attainable, though he also freely acknowledged the challenges and stumbles along the way. But one thing I'll never forget was his forceful assertion that the main ingredient for success was a changed attitude. The ability to see a lesson instead of a failure. The will to keep moving even when it seems like all is lost. It only took me about 25 years to finally get what he was saying, but I'm glad I made it. #personaldevelopment #positivepsychology #motivation …see more
