Any digital marketer worth her salt will tell you that if you want your brand to succeed in today’s market, you have to be creating content. Blog posts, e-books, whitepapers, infographics, podcasts… you name it. When it comes to #contentmarketing , the options are many. But you don't have to give away all of your content freely. By strategically gating some of your content - with a paywall or email sign-up - you can generate new #leads , improve #engagement and encourage conversions. …see more

#Disruption is the holy grail in the startup world. It's an entire discipline in business school. Figuring out how you'll disrupt your industry is seen as key in devising a #businessplan , and communicating how you'll disrupt your industry is something most founders obsess over when they're preparing to go in front of #investors . But what if we've been thinking about disruption all wrong? …see more

People often reach out to me for "how to" advise. They want to know how I became a writer, how I started competing in pageants, how I started working in entertainment, how I started my own business, etc. But the truth is, when I set out to do something new, I don't know what the heck I'm doing 99.9% of the time. But that's okay! Don't be afraid to fail. Experience is the best teacher, and imperfect action is better than no action. If you want to do something new, do your research and then just... do it :) …see more

"Discrimination committed against older women in broadcasting has profound implications for the rest of society. When women are not accurately represented in the media, it reinforces a culture that fails to take us seriously. It propagates the idea that we must look a certain way or that our worth is tied to appearance. It deprives us of role models and prevents us from seeing our true potential. It undermines our place in public dialogue." #KellyeMedia #age #discrimination #gender #work #news #media …see more

For #ThrowbackThursday , people asked me how I could stay in #Nairobi after the terrorist attack on #WestgateMall back in 2013. It happened less than a mile from where I lived, and to many seemed like a signal that I should pack up and come home. Yesterday, about two miles from home, a group of terrorists defiled and vandalized the seat of American democracy, and I watched it play out like Mr. Wilson huffing and puffing after Dennis the Menace. I'm more traumatized than I ever was during 9 years in Nairobi. I have enough food and toilet paper to last until January 21, so I may just hunker down til then. Oh--and The New York Times is calling it a "rampage." Black and Brown Americans saw the past repeating itself. White privilege is so baked into America's fabric that even the newspaper of record, the one that produced the #1619Project , refuses to admit it. It was a TERRORIST ATTACK. Say it. #AmericanHistory #AmericanPolitics #traumainformed #journalism #whiteprivilege #terroristsnotprotestors #terroristsnotpatriots …see more

After two years supporting several of The Aspen Institute 's fellowship programs, I'm convinced women can save the world. I've even got the receipts to prove it. The slideshow below features all of the amazing women I've been privileged to meet and/or work with over the past two years, through my work with National Geographic and Aspen's Healthy Communities and New Voices Fellowship programs. All of these women are visionary community organizers, communicators, doctors, lawyers, nurses, midwives, academics, photojournalists and policy experts et al. As I've interacted with some, supported others, and applauded them all, they have inspired me and challenged me to work a bit harder, to dream a bigger and believe that positive change is possible. For more information about the Aspen Healthy Communities Fellowship. click this link: https://lnkd.in/dJ-Vj6q ... And if you're working to create equity and opportunity in a community in the U.S., consider applying. The application deadline for the 2021 Class of Healthy Communities Fellows is Nov. 13. #AspenHealthyCommunities #AspenNewVoices #communityorganizing #communitydevelopment #globalhealth #globaldevelopment #healthequity https://lnkd.in/dzSyYqE …see more

Today would have been my mother Eloise's 94th birthday. One of the reasons I'm such a vocal supporter of the global fight to #EndChildMarriage is because even though my mother was 19 when she wed, her knowledge of the world, her own body and consciousness, were that of a sheltered yet heavily-burdened child. As the eldest of 9 children, her entire life had consisted of helping her mother raise her younger siblings and fighting to keep access to education. Obviously, I witnessed what Life did to my mother, 10 kids and 59 years later, when she passed. And I was grateful that her sacrifices allowed me to live with an abundance of choices. So I choose to join the fight to help more girls around the world escape the psychological, physical and spiritual abuse of #childmarriage . For example, did you know that more than 1 in 3 girls in #Honduras šŸ‡šŸ‡³ becomes a #childbride ? Check out the new Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage Spanish website to learn about #childmarriage in #LatinAmerica & the #Caribbean . #gender #globaldevelopment #VowForGirls #ISaidNo #genderjustice #womenandgirls https://bit.ly/2IDM5hN …see more

After my amazing journey back to #Detroit for #NABJ18 , I didn't think there was any room left in my heart for joy. But then I awoke this morning to the news that my former colleague and dear friend Sarah Ooko, Senior Communications and Media Officer for World Vision Kenya , has won the 2018 Health Reporting Award from the Media Council of Kenya for her feature about the economic impact of neglected tropical diseases in Kenya. Sarah was my able Lieutenant in a health journalism revolution that began in 2008, when the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) teamed up to improve the quality of health reporting in Kenya. Through a grant from the U. K.'s Wellcome Trust , we organized journalism trainings and briefings that served to help "brand" quality health and science reporting. Sarah Ooko represents the best and brightest for journalism on the African continent. I am so proud to be her friend and former mentor! For #ThrowbackThursday: This is where it all began, back in September of 1994. Well, actually, it all began at a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference a few months earlier, after I’d had a delightful dinner conversation with Richard A. Oppel, who was Washington Bureau Chief for Knight Ridder at the time. The Monday after NABJ, Rich called to ask if I wanted to work in Washington, DC. The rest has been one 24-year wild ride, and I wouldn’t change a thing. The moral of the story? Always, ALWAYS be ready to impress a high-powered person in your professional realm with your knowledge of Chilean wine. You never know where it’ll lead you. #Cheers šŸ· #NABJ #BlackGirlMagic #careerdevelopment …see more

Never let it be said that I'm not "on trend." I haven't owned a car since before I headed to East Africa 10 years ago, but if the gods are willing, maybe my next one will be a Tesla . That's why I'm psyched to be heading to the Charlotte-Matthews Tesla Showroom this evening, for an Invitation only Test Drive Event co-sponsored by Merrill Lynch . I'm tagging along with my best friend, #Charlotte Real Estate Consultant Faith T. , who can't wait to get her hands on that steering wheel. Should be a fun evening! …see more

The election of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia as World Health Organization Director General definitely sparked some seismic brain quakes for me. Having spent the past decade focusing on health care challenges in East Africa, I'm intrigued by what his tenure could mean for the continent, and for the global discussion about whether quality health care is a right for all or a privilege. I've written about it in my latest LinkedIn post, "An African Prescription for Global Health." Check it out. …see more
