As my stay in #AddisAbaba draws to a close, just know I have collected enough content to be posting about the 2019 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation #GrandChallenges #globalhealth forum for weeks to come. My grasp of the role of #science , #technology and #innovation in #globaldevelopment has grown exponentially. And my belief that #women CAN save the world is now unshakeable, because I have met some of the most accomplished, dynamic and visionary #womenscientists in the world here in #Ethiopia . Thanks to Ochieng' Ogodo of SciDev .Net for profiling these dynamic young African female scientists at the dawn of their careers. #Africa #AfricanScientists #WomenInSTEM #STI #AfricanResearch #AfricanResearchers …see more

Could it be that #America is trying to catch up with countries like #Rwanda and #Bolivia ? The majority of Rwanda's Members of Parliament are women, as are Bolivia's. #Ethiopia has a new woman President and Supreme Court Chief, and 50 percent of that country's MPs are women. Okay, I know the United States has a very, VERY long way to go to even reach parity, but the news from #Nevada is encouraging. When women participate in #policymaking decisions at every level, countries prosper along a broad series of indicators: health, #economics , #sustainabledevelopment , #education and #socialjustice . But don't believe me...just look at the evidence. Attending the #JAWSCAMP18 session on #personalbranding . Need to develop more insights into my own brand and the values I communicate. Often we think of branding as something you only do online. But #authenticity is needed in all phases of our lives, to truly communicate a brand. It's not your job title or your experience, or a summary of your resume. #SierraLeone appointed 31-year old MIT PhD David Sengeh as its first chief innovation officer. "What makes Sengeh’s appointment markedly different is that he will be operating within the Office of the President, unlike like the others on the continent, which are locked into the traditional governance structure and slow-moving bureaucracy of government ministries." Fascinating glimpse of the youth activism that arose from the Charlotte protests. Hearing from Activist Greg Jackson of the organization Heal Charlotte Ash Williams, a community organizer with Charlotte Uprising, are talking about the ways disenfranchised communities are trying to get their voices and concerns heard. Brenda Tindal, Staff Historian with the Levine Museum of the New South , is offering much-needed context about the history of African American and poor communities and their relationships with police. From the NAACP : One hundred years ago, blackface and other offensive media representations of African Americans were not only common, but celebrated. Few cultural moments encapsulate this more fully than D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" (1915), a notoriously Ku Klux Klan-friendly reimagining of history. "Birth of a Movement," a new film now streaming on Public Broadcasting Service , tells the story of William Monroe Trotter, an African-American newspaper editor and activist, who, along with the then newly-formed NAACP, waged a battle against the film. Trotter and the NAACP unleashed a conflict that still rages today about race relations, representation, and the power of Hollywood. …see more

career bankers have an established view of how banks should work. it is difficult for them to change banking models other than at the margin. this is compounded by the fact that those supervising banks (regulators, c-bankers, legislators) also have a traditional view on banking and/or regulation, monetary policy. the more non-career bankers will ascend within banking AND non-traditional thinkers will ascend within ranks of those that supervise banks, the faster banking will change from within. The core #Trump base - white voters without college degrees - is now only 39% of the American electorate, and it will continue to shrink. How should the #Republican party respond?

During the #COVID19 #recession , #unemployment has remained much lower in the #EU than in the #USA - but only because of massive government #jobs protection in Europe
